CMS returns in Albion stalemate

The Argus: Craig Mackail-Smith back in action this afternoon (photo Simon Dack) Craig Mackail-Smith back in action this afternoon (photo Simon Dack)

Albion’s winless run stretched to five games today against a Barnsley side who finished with ten men.

But a dour 0-0 draw at Oakwell was brightened by the return to action of Craig Mackail-Smith after more than a year out through injury.

The Seagulls survived two scares in the openeing period of the second half but will be disappointed they did not do more in the latter stages to grab the points.

Ryan McLaughlin sent a looping header against Albion’s crossbar soon after the break.

And Jean Yves M’voto powered a header inches wide with Tomasz Kuszczak beaten after Tom Kennedy whipped in a superb cross.

Kelvin Etuhu blocked a goalbound Leo Ulloa shot moments later.

But Etuhu was sent off on 76 minutes for his second bookable offence in quick succession, both on sub Kazenga LuaLua.

LuaLua’s resulting free-kick flashed inches wide from 25 yards.

Home keeper Luke Steele later parried an effort from similar range from the same player.

But that was the extent of Albion's threat against the ten men.

Mackail-Smith made his long-awaited comeback in the 78th minute in place of Jesse Lingard.

The first half was dull although Kuszczak had to dive to his left to hold a Dale Jennings curler.

Solly March, on his first away start in the Championship, produced some moments of promise with his clever footwork.

2 points from the last 5 games,at this crucial stage of the season,is woeful and more akin to relegation form.Fired blanks again today .Barnsley, yes Barnsley have taken 4 points off the Albion and could well be relegated. That says it all.

Good result. With Forest still out of sorts and
Reading’s tough run-in, away at Bournemouth next and also they have games against Wigan, Leicester, Burnley and Boro.
I have us as favourites for the final play-off place now.

Quite happy with a point at Barnsley who only last week stuffed Reading!
Ipswich and Forest losing is a bonus, Reading have a tough run in, Ipswich and Forest are in a slump at the moment, beware of Bournemouth though, could sneak it on present form.
A point or a win at Leicester with home games to follow, it is still in our hands.

With Reading having a really tough run in it might be down to who can limp over the line.
Of the 4 teams on 58points, Bournemouth are the form team
Certainly Forest & Ipswich have also ground to a halt.

We cannot let Bournemouth do us

A win against already promoted Leicester and we are back in the game

Have to agree, our form has to change, and where better than to do the double away to champions elect Leicester.

Wonder whether it would all have been different had we managed to sign Grabban in the January window? There's always one team that comes from nowhere to make the playoffs each season and this year's candidates are Bournemouth, thanks largely to Grabban's goals. Hope we didn't miss out for the sake of a few thousand pounds.

Sadly at this stage of the season not good enough, for a playoff challenge. A good season for Oscar in his first season in charge of a championship side, but if hes going to improve on this season, he will need to change tactics about playing 2 up front. Our goals scored ratio fir a top eight team this season is woeful. Yes we might not coincide too many goals and have the best defence in the championship, but we aint pulling up trees at tge other end either. This has to change or supporters will vote with their feet and not turn up!!! People's patients only last so long. Anyway its nit over til the fat lady sings, and shes already clearing her throat !!!!

You keep saying about O.G. bringing in 'his own players' but that is not going to happen is it? His job is to coach the players brought in by others. That's the problem. He is not the Manager and has very little input into buying players. Who has he bought so far? Nobody!
Also, what attacking style? He seems to be tactically inept.

At the start of the season I had an opinion, that given the style Gus left us with , would we adapt to Oscar's new inexperienced style, given that he has a great managerial record in non UK football.
And in my opinion we are where we are. A great mid table club that has suffered devastating absences from key players of influence.
The likes of Hammond , Bridge , Vicente , who are all gone ...and our form of players like Lopez , Buckley , Bruno has been less of an impact. plus combined with Bridcutt leaving as a main Backbone of the defence has dented us. given all this info... we are still a mid budgeted football team who play PROPER football.
The fans this year have been epic and in this league , the largest average attendance in the championship. so all this indicates we are missing something. Maybe a key midfielder with Vision and impact. a winger with great ball control to provide service to the front men , A defence that adaptable to come forward. all this is just about one thing. MONEY!!!!! we are respecting the new Financial fair play rules and adhering to a club of sustainability. The long term of the club is paramount to our survival. PLEASE BE PATIENT. this will come... we are not Chelsea or man city. we are a very succesfull south coast club that was nearly doomed 14 years ago.. and our resurgence has been amazing. lets all lower our expectations and become realistic. I love this club..... always have always will . XXX

Well it's still perfectly possible for us to make that last play off place, but, we are increasingly now relying on the likes of Reading, Forest and Ipswich to slip up, this we cannot do forever we are now 5 points adrift of 6 th place. So annoying that we've dropped points AGAIN to Barnsley who are relegation material, we seem to really lack a killer cutting edge now, despite the 3 goals against Blackburn. Just gone off the boil at the crucial stage of the season, the reasons for it are probably a combination of things, maybe some of it is Oscars tactics, some of it injuries, some of it player attitude and some of it just the sheer limitations of the squad. A big performance is required now against Leicester to keep the play off fire burning but it's possible.

East of CrawleyDown

I believe everyone is down because we only score now and again, and although we are likely to get a result at Leicester, realise our home form against lower opposition is bad.
Would have liked to see CMS come on at the same time as KLL today.

Bournemouth have the momentum. It doesn't matter about the opponents we have we cannot score on a regular basis. The players are looking for the season to end and most of them clear off elsewhere.

I think we are in real trouble unless we splash (Bloom's) cash. Too many players out of contract and most of those who will want to stay are not up to the task. The good ones came because of Poyet . It' s tough on OG who has no prior experience of English football and does not have the pulling power of GP. If only we had Bournemouth's recruiting ability. They don't spend a lot but seem to get good value. They must break every FFP rule with their gates but like all the others do they care!!

Good result. With Forest still out of sorts and
Reading’s tough run-in, away at Bournemouth next and also they have games against Wigan, Leicester, Burnley and Boro.
I have us as favourites for the final play-off place now.
Wish people would stop harping on about the results of teams around us. It makes absolutely no difference if Reading or Ipswich are losing or drawing if we don't win our games. Likewise if we were winning all our games we would be near the top of the table regardless of how other teams fair.

If you want to know how watchable this game was take a look at the bloke in the top right hand corner of the picture.

Says it all except Oscar, Jones, Burke and Day OUT.

We ended Barnsley's impressive run in its tracks, but that is little consolation when considering the importance attached to the game. As we have seen over the course of the season, anything is possible in this League, so I wouldn't write off our chances just yet.
As sevenD points out, it is all about money, and to comply with FFP, the squad has taken a hit in terms of quality.
I find it significant that Massimo Cellino's disqualification from owning Leeds Utd has been overturned by an independent QC.
It is a reminder that football does not exist in a vacuum.
Although FFP is a completely different matter, clubs which face financial penalties will feel encouraged to challenge the football authorities over their legality.
If, for example, you were hit with a £20m fine, you would not take it lying down, knowing how easily the Football League's "owners and directors test" has been circumvented by Cellino.

Last time they lost in the league was at The Amex so Brighton to do the double?

Wonder whether it would all have been different had we managed to sign Grabban in the January window? There's always one team that comes from nowhere to make the playoffs each season and this year's candidates are Bournemouth, thanks largely to Grabban's goals. Hope we didn't miss out for the sake of a few thousand pounds.
In the unlikely event we are promoted it could cost us millions not a few thousand.Look back in our history when we were promoted to the old Div 1, it almost led to us going out of the league and going into administration,we were envious of the likes of Swansea,Cardiff and Palace but no longer. We can look forward with confidence of keeping a decent position in this league ,next season.
