Albion supershow revives play-off bid

The Argus: Stephen Ward heads in the first (photos Simon Dack) Stephen Ward heads in the first (photos Simon Dack)

Albion gave their play-off hopes a massive boost by winning 4-1 at promoted Leicester tonight.

Stephen Ward and Jesse Lingard scored in the first half and Leo Ulloa added a second-half brace.

Albion were 2-0 up in 24 minutes and left-back Ward was heavily involved in both goals.

He galloped on to recalled Kazenga LuaLua’s clever pass to force the corner for the 17th-minute opener and then headed home Dale Stephens’ delivery from close range.

Seven minutes later Ward whipped in a superb cross from near the corner flag and Lingard rose to head home.

It almost got even better for the Seagulls as Ulloa angled a lob past the oncoming Kasper Schmeichel but wide of the far post.

Chris Wood was sent on as part of a double switch by the hosts at half-time and almost immediately sent a shot against the outside of the post.

But then Stephens almost put the contest beyond doubt as he eased the ball past the advancing Schmeichel, only for Marcin Wasilewski to get back and clear from just in front of his own goal.

Stephens teed up Ulloa’s second-half double before Gary Taylor-Fletcher replied at the death.

Ulloa fired past two defenders on the line and then thumped home a far-post header for his brace.

Magnificent result tonight and just goes to show what can happen when you send a team out to win the game from outset.

Been calling for Kaz to start from day 1 and so I'm absolutely chuffed to bits that he put on a show tonight.

Makes me wonder what might have been had we showed this intent a few weeks back but as long as OG sticks with this new positive approach then I see no reason why we won't still be in it at the death.
We have so much fire power within our great club... Let's please continue to use it for all remaining games.

Well done to OG tonight for having the courage to send out that side... Just hope he has learnt a lot tonight and doesn't go back to defensive mode on Saturday.

Absolutely agree. Don't understand what is wrong with some people. Amongst the upheaval in the summer and number of injuries, Garcia has done a great job whether we finish in or out of the top 6. The play and build up has all been great, the one thing we've been guilty of this season is not converting. It doesn't matter what system you play, if you don't do that last bit it makes no difference, so don't understand why people were going on and on to drastically change things. We did convert tonight which is excellent, although sounds like March, Lindgard and Lualua all clicked instantly and Stephens was getting forward as well. So an exciting last 5 games I hope, and whatever happens, well done Oscar!

There are a lot of people coming out saying about how the 'moaners' won't be on here tonight....

Well - you people need to take your head out of your ar**s. WE HAVE WANTED AN ATTACKING TEAM ALL SEASON, WE HAVE SCREAMED THIS TO GARCIA TIME AND TIME AGAIN, WE NEED TWO WINGERS PLAYING, WE NEED WIDTH, WE NEED TWO UP TOP ETC ETC ETC....

what happens - we win 4-1! It was because of us 'real' fans that Garcia obviously knew it could not continue..and he picked this for the fans at Leicester...so this result is for them more than anyone.

It is frustrating, as we always knew this is what was needed. So looking back, how many games have we thrown away??

Good result tonight, proud of the boys - but please don't start having a go at people who have criticised the tactics of late - as here is proof of reasoning behind the points made.

Neville interesting to see that with only 46% possession we score 4 goals but so often with more than 60% possession we score none or only one. On an earlier thread today Neville you may recall our exchange of posts about our lack of Goals especially when dominating opponents. We seem to be a more effective attacking force when we have less than 50% possession. The 2-0 win over QPR is another example of this.
I believe this is the first time we have scored 4 times this season. Doing the double over Leicester is probably the outstanding achievement for the Albion this season What a tonic ! The play-offs still remain a possibility. UTA.

Vegas ,my man Kaz is a magician ,nobody likes playing against him ,in fact i would say he is one of the most underrated players around ....mostly by us !.
The point is Vegas ,i dont think he has to last 90 minutes ,but it is vital that he starts ,he makes an impact from the start ,that sets a tempo for the entire game ,i personally would let him tell me ,when he has had enough ,then sub him . Chances are he has either created goals ,scored or led their back 4 such a merry dance ,that they dont know what day of the week it is .
Tonights line up for me was almost perfect ,Ince in for Andrews and Dunk for Greer (absolutely no disrespect to either lad) . But for Saturday ,exactly the same ,because everyone knows you do not change a winning side !!.
So proud of our lads ,so proud of Oscar ,it could be that he felt out of his comfort zone ,so to speak ,to make such changes tonight ,but he deserves every credit that can be said ,thanks for a night to remember Oscar . UTA

Looking at other teams run ins I think even 71 points might do it. So 3 wins and a draw or 4 wins to be safe
Oscar's temperament under pressure could be an advantage over the next few weeks.
Some people would prefer the technical area antics of someone like Di Canio lol.
4 wins, and we can afford to lose one.
No draws please!

Well said, Tommy.
If anything, tonight's result vindicates the previous criticism of O.G.'s selection and tactics.

Well I'm doubly chuffed.
I said on a post last night that I had a feeling about tonight.
So I used a £20 free bet from paddypower at 3-1

You can shout as loud as you like Thomas. The real reason we scored tonight was because we took our chances. Ward has been playing all season. Leo has found his mojo and Jesse has popped his cherry. Wingers have been playing all season and tonite the final ball found a team mate who scored. Magnificent team performance and well taken goals.

You havn`t rained on my parade ,anyone who knows anything at all about football ,will know you can do far more damage with two wingers than one ,and "Rod "is a striker ,who was played wide .It wasn`t just one change of personel ,it was the formation ,2 wingers and 2 strikers ,result an away win 4-1 at the Champions elect ,but what would i know ,after all i am one of those "bedwetting idiots" that have been advocating this exact set up and team selection all season !.

Vegas one option for Oscar on Saturday if he doesn't want to risk starting with LuaLua would be to move March to the wing and bring in either JFC or Ince to midfield. CMS and Rodriguez are other options in place of LuaLua.
Since I don't think that Oscar feels LuaLua can start two matches in the same week I expect to see him on the bench against Charlton.
One other thought. I think I would stick with Calde at RB.

He has played Kaz and Buckley from the start before, and Kaz has been pants, I particularly remember a poor performance against Hull at the Amex from Kaz, with Buckley on the other wing. Most of the talk has been about whether Kaz is always going to be better as an impact sub than as a starter. You might have been calling for him to start every game but a lot of others, including me, have preferred his performances as a sub to the performances in the games he has started.

What is getting up my nose tonight is posters who are saying that this result is down to a magical formation that Oscar has never tried before, and they have been begging for all season. He has fielded two wingers before, and for much of the season he has been lucky if he had one winger fit.

We had two wingers on from the start when we got beat 3-1 at home to Newport, we had two wingers on when we lost away at Ipswich and we had two wingers on when we lost 3-1 at home to 10 man Forest. I am sure there were some games we won with two on before, but I leave you to go find them.

My point is that all the mystic megs on here trying to claim a "Told you so" against OG have ignored the games we have lost doing what they advocate, it isn't the formation, it is putting your chances away.
How many games do you reckon we have had two fit wingers and two fit strikers available this season?

SEAGULLS[/p]
You havn`t rained on my parade ,anyone who knows anything at all about football ,will know you can do far more damage with two wingers than one ,and "Rod "is a striker ,who was played wide .It wasn`t just one change of personel ,it was the formation ,2 wingers and 2 strikers ,result an away win 4-1 at the Champions elect ,but what would i know ,after all i am one of those "bedwetting idiots" that have been advocating this exact set up and team selection all season !. It`s a shame that fans like you cant except that even when your proven wrong , you respond with arrogance and patronage . There are true fans on this site tonight ,that rather than feel the need to make excuses ,are ultimately happy at the changes made ,it`s not them that need the humble pie ,but you might want seconds .[/p]
I am sure there were some games we won with two on before, but I leave you to go find them.[/p]
Two league games and a LC game ,thats your argument against 2 wingers ,oh and i`ll leave you to find the ones we won with two on ?. WHATS WRONG WITH TONIGHTS GAME ,doesn`t back your pointless point ,does it ,as i said two days ago ,Kaz comes on and things happen ,every time ,not once in a while ,but always . We are lucky to have him ,and people like you are the first to say ,why did we let so and so go ?? . What you have failed to see ,is that Oscar has played 2 wingers before ,but not with 2 strikers for a whole game !!.[/p]
My point is that all the mystic megs on here trying to claim a "Told you so" against OG have ignored the games we have lost doing what they advocate, it isn't the formation, it is putting your chances away. How many games do you reckon we have had two fit wingers and two fit strikers available this season? Baldseagull

Well done boys
We as fans, don't see what Oscar sees day to day on the training ground. There has to be a very good reason why Oscar didn't play Max from the start in every match. Even if he did get it wrong, he still had more information than we to base it's judgement on. If it was so easy to be a manager, we'd ALL be doing it. Look at Bournemouth under their present manager and compare that with when he left. Their fortunes have changed dramatically since he returned. We can have opinions, but the verbal salvaging of Oscar is uncalled for and stupid!!!
