An Enfield school took silver in the girls' football competition at the London Youth Games last Wednesday.

St James' School finished as runners-up to Hounslow's St Mary's Catholic Primary, with a penalty shoot-out settling the contest.

With two wins and a loss from their group games, St James' progressed to set up a quarter-final tie with Merton side St John Fisher, emerging victorious on penalties.

In the semi final, St James' won on spot-kicks once more, beating Collis of Richmond to progress to the final.

After a third consecutive 0-0 draw lead to a penalty shoot out in the final, St James' luck finally ran out as they were beaten by St Mary's, missing out on gold.

Vickie Brain, PE co-ordinator at St James' praised her team: "Their achievement is outstanding and their behaviour and attitude from them and all the other teams here has been remarkable. It’s been a really good.

"We did the London Youth Games last year with the gymnastics and this year we got to bring a football team, so for our school, the London Youth Games is quite a big deal. We’ve also got the gold kite mark because we keep going to the London Youth Games."

There was also an appearance from England’s most capped footballer ever and former London Youth Games player Rachel Yankey, who came on the second day of the girls' competition.

In the boys' tournament, Enfield representatives St Paul's were beaten in the quarter finals by Havering's Branfield Primary School to end their challenge.
