Albion want to end a long wait for a home win over Charlton Athletic today.

It has not quite been a case of “30 years of hurt” at home to the Addicks.

But you have to go back to the days of World In Motion for the last time Athletic had a pointless trip to Sussex.

New Order’s iconic World Cup tune was not long out of the charts when Barry Lloyd’s men beat Charlton at the Goldstone Ground in September 1990 at the start of a season which would end at Wembley.

The scoring sequence was the same as the last game between these two sides, at the Valley on Boxing Day, as the home side went 1-0 down and 3-1 up before winning 3-2.

Mike Small, Robert Codner and Dean Wilkins were on target in the comeback.

Garry Nelson, a hugely popular player with both these clubs, was involved in what turned out to be the winner.

Would-be BBC TV interviewer Garth Crooks asked a few questions with his late goal but Albion took the points.

They went on to make the second-tier play-off final.

Since then Charlton have enjoyed wins at the Goldstone (2-1) and Withdean (2-0).

The 1-1 draw at Withdean in 2010-11 felt more like a win for the Seagulls, en route to the League One title.

They played with ten men from the seventh minute, thanks to Inigo Calderon’s disputed red card, by which time they already trailed to Johnnie Jackson’s penalty. But Glenn Murray levelled with a brilliant flick.

Ben Hamer made it four unbeaten in Sussex with a fingertip save from Vicente late in last term’s 0-0 draw at the Amex, which was Charlton’s first visit to the stadium.
