SUSSEX’S bowling attack skittled Warwickshire for just 87 on a chaotic opening day at Edgbaston that saw 20 wickets fall.

Chris Jordan and Steve Magoffin both claimed figures of 3-15 while Jon Lewis returned 3-18 before skipper Ed Joyce’s century help Sussex to establish a 142-run first-innings lead yesterday.

Jonathan Trott, on his first competitive outing since he left England’s tour of Australia, top-scored for the hosts in the County Championship Division One tussle.

But he was later put in the shade by Joyce, whose 117 underpinned Sussex’s total of 229.

Ian Bell’s decision to bat first looked unfortunate when the hosts collapsed inside 28 overs.

Jordan, Magoffin and Lewis stole the show in a stunning first session.

Varun Chopra became the first to fall for one, edging Jordan to Michael Yardy at second slip to bring Trott to the crease in the fourth over.

Warwickshire’s No.3 was off the mark straight away with a single but he soon had a new partner as Laurie Evans nicked a Jordan delivery through to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.

Bell then departed for a four-ball duck, to give Jordan his third victim.

Tim Ambrose and Trott moved the hosts to 64-3 but Warwickshire lost their final seven wickets for just 23 runs. Lewis picked up his first scalp when Ambrose offered Yardy another catch before James Anyon trapped Chris Woakes in front.

Rikki Clarke was bowled by Magoffin after making four while Keith Barker became the second of four batsmen to make ducks when Jordan held an edge off Lewis. Trott fell 13 shy of a half-century when he played on to a Magoffin delivery.

Sussex wrapped up the tail before lunch, Magoffin and Lewis respectively accounting for Chris Wright and Oliver Hannon-Dalby.

In reply, Luke Wells found Trott at midwicket off Barker’s bowling but Joyce was in imperious form.

The first of back-to-back boundaries brought up his 50 and he continued to score at around a run a ball before Woakes bowled Yardy for nine to end a 59-run stand.

Sussex’s captain put his side ahead by plundering an extra-cover drive to the fence, and although Hannon-Dalby snared Rory Hamilton-Brown lbw for 24, Joyce pressed on to reach three figures after 116 deliveries.

He was dropped by Trott at deep midwicket from the next ball but Warwickshire claimed seven wickets after tea and stumps was called.
