Sussex coach Mark Robinson insists he is happy to keep a low profile as England’s search for a new head coach begins in earnest.

The ECB are due to begin the interview process in the next few weeks as they look to fill the gap left when Andy Flower quit in January.

Current limited overs coach Ashley Giles remains favourite to perform the role in all three formats despite England’s dismal showing at the World T20 last month.

Former Sussex coach Peter Moores, who is now at Lancashire, has also received significant support after making it known he would like a second shot at the England job after his previous spell in the role ended prematurely in 2009. Nottinghamshire coach Mick Newell is another who has been touted along with Australian Trevor Bayliss, who has previously coached Sri Lanka.

However, Robinson has barely received a mention since he announced he had been advised it was worth his while applying for the job in February.

For some reason Robinson remains a dark horse even though his stock has surely risen after leading England Lions on a successful tour of Sri Lanka.

His achievements in the domestic game are also better than all the other contenders, having guided Sussex to six major trophies in his eight seasons in charge at Hove since succeeding Moores, although he has not got his hands on any silverware since the T20 Cup in 2009.

Robinson said: “From my point of view it is better to be under the radar rather than have a lot of unwanted speculation.

“I don’t mind at all as it is not something I particularly want to talk about as I’ve got a job to get on with at Sussex. All I’ll say is that I have had conversations (with the ECB) and the process is ongoing.

“I’ve made it clear it is something I would love to do but if you offered any of the 18 (first class) coaches the opportunity then they would want to grab it.

“If the opportunity is there for me then I want to put my hat in the ring but I am lucky as I’ve already got a great job here and I love it.

“I have been very conscious while I was away with the Lions and then while all this has been going on to make sure I am looking after my bread and butter which is Sussex. It is what you tell your players so you’ve got to have the same attitude yourself. “It is what I tell CJ (Chris Jordan) and Matty Prior. “You’ve got to do the basics and the rest will take care of itself.”

A report in the Daily Telegraph today said Robinson was being interviewed for the position this week
