Crawley effectively sealed their place in League One for next season with a 2-0 victory at home to Tranmere this season.

Goals from Matt Tubbs and substitute Gwion Edwards lifted the Reds nine points clear of the relegation zone.

That will surely be enough of a cushion for manager John Gregory to start planning for next season.

Paul Jones twice produced important saves before the deadlock was broken, first holding Matthew Pennington’s header from a corner on the goalline and then grabbing Max Power’s 25-yard strike at the second attempt.

It was Power who conceded the free-kick which led to the opening goal on 37 minutes. Jamie Proctor was brought down in a central position 25 yards from goal and Tubbs curled a beautiful shot into the goalkeeper’s top right-hand corner.

Tranmere had a good chance to equalise nine minutes into the second half when a through ball bounced over the head of Connolly to put Jake Cassidy in but Paul Jones did superbly well to deny the forward at the expense of a corner.

Edwards wrapped up victory four minutes from time by poking his shot past the advancing Owain Fon Williams for a debut goal.
