Bruno has been hailed an unlikely goal hero for Albion after rescuing a precious point in their challenge for the Championship play-offs.

The veteran Spanish defender popped up with an 83rd-minute equaliser in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Huddersfield to edge the Seagulls back into the top six and extend their unbeaten run to five games.

It was Bruno’s second goal in 62 outings for the club and the first away from home for the 33-year-old right-back since arriving from Valencia on a free transfer two years ago.

Six different players have now contributed goals during Albion’s undefeated sequence to relieve the scoring pressure on the prolific Leo Ulloa.

Head coach Oscar Garcia’s assistant Nathan Jones told The Argus: “It’s massive, because you can’t rely on one player to get you the goals to get you wins all the time. There is an onus on people. We have good, technical players that score regularly in training.

“Some people have to step up and he (Bruno) was magnificent. “He really had the desire to get on the end of something and once he is in those positions he has fantastic technique so it wasn’t a surprise that he actually finished it off.

He definitely has that in him but we know what Bruno is in the side for. He is an outstanding technician who does superbly well for us. If he can chip in with a few goals as well we would be very grateful, as we would with anyone.

“It was one of those days - and this is what happens when you get to late on in the season - that some unlikely heroes pop up and strange things happen, strange results happen, because pressure takes over, adrenalin takes over.”

Matt Upson missed only his second league match of the season due to injury, while regular partner and captain Gordon Greer climbed off his sick bed to play the whole game alongside the deputising Lewis Dunk.

Ipswich need to win at Watford today to knock Albion back out of the play-off zone ahead of successive matches at the Amex for Oscar’s side against Blackpool on Monday and Yeovil on Friday.
