Oscar: "We did enough to win"

The Argus: Oscar Garcia shows his frustration against Blackpool today Oscar Garcia shows his frustration against Blackpool today

Albion boss Oscar Garcia insists his promotion-chasers did enough to beat Blackpool at the Amex today, despite a poor half.

The Seagulls had to settle for a 1-1 draw against their relegation-threatened visitors after a curling effort from Dale Stephens straight after the half-time was swiftly cancelled out by a stunning strike from ex-Albion misfit Stephen Dobbie.

Oscar told The Argus: "I'm disappointed not to take all three points but this league is so difficult to win a lot of games in a row.

"We wanted to start brightly but we couldn't because Blackpool kept the ball and it was hard for us to get it back.

"In the first half we didn't play well but in the second half I think we played much better.

"We started brightly and scored a good goal. We needed more energy, more tempo, more determination to win the game and that's what we did.

"We are disappointed to concede the goal soon after our goal. If that hadn't happened I think we had the game under control.

"We didn't create as many chances as usual but I think we did enough to win the game in the second half."

Albion, unbeaten in six matches, are still sixth but ninth-placed Reading are two points behind with a game in hand at home to Middlesbrough tomorrow night and six teams are divided by only three points in the race for the final play-off spot.

Erm, no, we didn't. In the English Championship one needs to score more goals than the opponents. Ok?

Does he REALLY think that??? You have to wonder whether we REALLY want to get into the play-offs. Yes, we are unbeaten in 6 matches but we’ve only won 2 of them and drawn the other 4. We’d be better off to have won 4 and lost 2 of those matches.

We’ve played two poor teams in the last 4 days and we should have been able to beat both of them. Had we done so we would now be in a fantastic position.

Huddersfield were poor but after 80 minutes we were a goal down, it could have been more and we hadn’t had a single shot on target. We did have 2 shots on target in the final 10 minutes and we equalised. However both of the on target shots were by defenders: our attackers contributed nothing at all to the match.

Today Blackpool were mediocre at best but we were, frankly, abysmal. We should won comfortably but we only managed 3 shots on target, 2 of them by Stephens. Once again, our attackers contributed nothing. At least Garcia did eventually, thankfully, take off all of March (nowhere near good enough), Lingard and Lua Lua, though sadly the substitutes were no better and Buckley missed a great chance to win the match. It was hardly the performance of a team good enough to compete in the play-offs for a place in the Premiership.

In truth we have only occasionally looked good enough for the play-offs this season and it’s surprising that we still have a chance of getting there, though we are an amazing 27 points behind Leicester and 15 behind Derby, who we would have to play in the play-offs. There are still 7 teams that could overtake us and two wins are an absolute must if we want to be involved in the paly-offs. Will we beat Yeovil? Can we win at Forest? Not playing as we did today!

Poorest performance I've seen this season. Unbelievable number of wasted dead balls today - how can professionals be so poor at the delivery when presumably they practise all week? A free opportunity to put the ball into the danger area with pace for attackers to run on to and more often than not our attacking gift was immediately turned into a break for the opposition or a goal kick at best.

Maybe something lost in the interpretation, but we did not deserve to win with that performance which was abysmal in the first half and not a great deal better in the second half.
Very few players were on form and the first half was like a practice match and why on earth don't players shoot when they have half a chance.
Andrews I am afraid just slows play up in the middle, takes three touches and then passes. Passing, crossing and final ball was awful generally and like GP there is no plan B.Cannot fault the team selection today but majority of players let us all down today.

My first game in three months after recovering from an operation and I could not believe how poor the team was. There are players at this club taking money under false pretences only CMS and Ward earned their money today. Clear out at the end of the season is MUST!

I vote we get a hard liner like Billy Davies in right now for these last 2 games, someone respected who the players take notice of. The players have been getting away with murder under Oscar, about time they were told, THIS IS A FOOTBALL CLUB AND NOT A HOLIDAY RESORT. Okay well Brighton is a bit of a holiday resort but you get the drift.

I cannot understand the incredulity expressed in this thread about Oscar's public statement.
His role includes keeping the Albion bandwagon going until the end of the season. That means maintaining some semblance of unity amongst the staff and players. He is unlikely to achieve that goal by openly criticising them.
No doubt he feels we have a better chance of getting to the play offs with fragile confidence intact rather than destroyed by criticism.... and no doubt he will manage the team's affairs appropriately away from the glare of the media.

We didn't play well our second ball poor and parading was dire, but Blackpool came to do a job and they did, 5 yellow cards and 17 fouls, they put up the barricade and we did have anything to break them down.
It will probably be the same against Yeovil even if they are relegated the game is televised, players will be putting themselves in the window some players will be playing for a new contract others will want out to stay in the Championship; it will not be easy, although I will still be there.

We didn't do enough to win because we couldn't lose! Pausing briefly to acknowledge the first half was full of slips and trips and shoves and kicks ignored by the referee, that slowed the game down and achieved Blackpool's plan to frustrate and closedown are usual possession and passing game.

The second half was much better! Started brilliantly with a classy goal by Stephens, cancelled out by a sweetly struck equaliser by a guy we know can strike a ball. What followed was an awkward attempt to up the tempo and rely on wingers crosses and long balls from the back that had just to much adrenelin fuelled length to hit their intended target (with the exception of the one that hit CMS on his back!). It was a game we did enough to win, but frustratingly for all to see, it finished as just a game we didn't lose!

What a job Blackpool done on us today very physical stopped our passing game, the referee was diabolical forgot his cards first half.
We where harried all game and didn't take the few chances we had.
I think we where lucky they had nothing to offer going forward It's one we could have lost.
It's out of our hands now we just have to match on and win last two games.

No doubt this will attract thumbs down, but I am so sick of hearing OG telling us how fortunate we are to be in the position we are in with all the bad luck we have had for most of the season, and up to a point he is right, but that point has been reached, and now - with more or less a full squad from which to chose - there is no reason why we have won only two out of the last nine. Even I we manage to make the six, and in the unlikely event of actual promotion, how many of this squad would cut it n the Premiership and do we really have the resources to build a new team? If we can't beat the likes of Blackpool and Barnsley then frankly we don't deserve to be in the six. W should not have to rely on Middlesbrough, and three points against Yeovil now seems a forlorn hope. We will ten probably thump Forrest !

But then we beat Leicester twice, and haven taken four points from each of Burnley and QPR, so maybe we DO deserve to be in the top 6.

Basically, we will deserve to be roughly where we finish.

Interesting, is it not, that you include the transfers fees and wages of CMS in your evaluations, but not those of Barnes?

Barnes will almost certainly not play much in the Premier League as he isn't good enough, but I would have dearly loved him to stay at the Amex. He wanted to leave, and fair play to him. He has bided his time and done okay up north.

If only you knew CMS wages lol haha.

Thank God for this intelligent well balanced point of view. Some of the supporters on this site might do well to read and heed the words in Kipling's great poem 'IF'

Thank you Brightonup!!!

I know he's on a shedload of money, but why did you include HIS wages in your 'calculations' and not Barnes's? You've hardly offered a balanced opinion, have you, by mangling the 'evidence'.

If you want to strike a comparison, at least do it with comparable information.

Freeloader has many disguises. He's a friendly guy when you get to know him so don't take his wind ups too seriously, I met him at 'The Bird in Hand' (Croydon pub). Appearances can be deceptive so give him a chance.

Oscar must think he's a spin doctor - sorry any neutral who didn't know which side was which wouldn't know which was fighting relegation. My first game in three months after recovering from an operation and I could not believe how poor the team was. There are players at this club taking money under false pretences only CMS and Ward earned their money today. Clear out at the end of the season is MUST!
CMS earned his money today? Really? Yes, he ran about like a puppy chasing a sparrow, tried an ambitious overhead kick, had the ball bounce off the back of his head and still has the first touch of a blind juggler. I saw nothing from him to separate him from the rest of the team.

He does give us energy and effort for 100% of the time he is on the pitch, that is undeniable but that alone isn't enough.

He has been banned, what, 25 times from this site? How many chances does he need? There is a world of difference between a windup and abuse.

And why is a guy who is friendly in person such an aggresive sociopath online? I don't believe a word of it.
