Sussex fought back with the ball in the afternoon session at Hove after Marcus Trescothick had completed his first century for 19 months to put Somerset in control.

Trescothick put on 139 for the fifth wicket with Alviro Petersen as Somerset moved from 174-4 at lunch to 286-8 at tea on the second day of the Championship match.

The former England opener made the 52nd first class century of his career from 214 balls having earlier been dropped in the slips by Ed Joyce on 65.

Petersen also looked in good form as he reached his half century off 103 balls including six fours and a straight six off Ashar Zaidi.

He finally fell for 76 when he was stumped by Ben Brown off the bowling off Zaidi just before the new ball was taken.

Trescothick then perished driving at Steve Magoffin who got the new ball to nip back and remove his middle stump, possibly off an inside edge, having made 115.

Chris Jordan then picked up his fourth wicket by having James Hildreth caught in the slips by Joyce for 18.

Craig Keiswetter made just five before edging Jon Lewis, who had switched to the sea end, to Joyce to leave the score 267-8 before Peter Trego (10) and Johann Myburgh (4) saw Somerset through to tea.
