Sussex face an uphill battle to avoid defeat after being made to follow-on on the third day of their County Championship clash with Somerset at Hove.

Lewis Gregory completed a five-wicket haul as Sussex were dismissed for 142 in their first innings, a deficit of 230.

Only Luke Wells offered much resistance with an unbeaten 79 and in the process became the first Sussex batsman to carry his bat in the Championship since 2004.

Somerset skipper Marcus Trescothick had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on and was rewarded when Wells was finally dismissed as Sussex reached tea on 62-1.

Gregory continued to terrorise the Sussex batsman after lunch as he picked up the wickets of Chris Jordan for five and James Anyon for two as Wells began to run out of partners.

Steve Magoffin was pinned lbw by Jamie Overton to leave Sussex on 106-9 before Jon Lewis put on 36 runs with Wells for the final wicket.

Peter Trego finished off the Sussex innings by bowling Lewis for 11 with Wells left stranded having faced 168 balls.

Sussex made a much better start in their second innings but Wells perished just before lunch when he was caught in the slips off the bowling of Trego for 26.

Ed Joyce is unbeaten on 26 and Mike Yardy 3.
