Albion out of luck in play-off opener

The Argus: Jesse Lingard opens the scoring (photos Simon Dack) Jesse Lingard opens the scoring (photos Simon Dack)

Albion need a tenth away win of the season if they are to get to Wembley after their play-off dreams suffered a setback tonight.

The Seagulls let slip an early lead to lose 2-1 to Derby in the first leg of their semi-final.

Jesse Lingard fired them ahead on 18 minutes after good work by Inigo Calderon down the right.

Chris Martin levelled with a penalty after Matt Upson fouled Craig Forsyth.

Then Martin’s blast in first-half stoppage time crashed back off the bar and bounced off the unfortunate Tomasz Kuszczak for what proved to be the winner.

Albion gave it their all in the second half but found man-of-the-match Lee Grant in inspired form in the Derby goal.

Grant turned a Leo Ulloa volley on to the bar, produced a fine parry from Lingard and then topped that with a tip over from Stephen Ward’s blast.

Albion also looked to have good penalty claims for holding by Jake Buxton on Ulloa.

I think what's important is that we are not out of the match. Had we conceded a third it would have been a big pshycological barrier to overcome. As it is we can go to Derby with absolutely nothing to lose.

On the match tonight I thought we were good for the first 30 mins and actually made our posession count witha good finish from Lingard. After that we seemed to slip back into our slow game and we paid the price due to fast counter attacking football. The game reminded me of when Watford played us at the Amex last season. Derby played fast counter attacking football and made it count when critical opportunities presented themselves.

We are still in this - make no mistake. My biggest disappointment tonight was CMS not getting enough time on the pitch and that JFC wasn't subbed sooner. Repeat the performance of the first 30mins on Sunday and who knows. Keep the faith - I think there is still a big twist to come.

Problem is squad is very poor outside our best 11, we should have played ince , really honestly derby were a class above, one touch football , quick interchange passing .. As I said the other day , they will look to pass to feet and draw the foul.
Where was the pace, the quality.. I honestly don't think they gave 100% tonight.

We are still in with a chance but Andrews ( dreadful tonight ) and Jake Forster-Caskey ( will never get any better, very poor tonight) are just not good enough short term or long term for the Albion. Some players didn`t step up to the plate when needed so they should be out Sunday. CMS has to start and hopefully Ince. Oscar`s a bit predictable and it might ( hope not ), cost him.

Ince in for JFC and CMS for Lingard. I assume Buckley will not be fit so I would play March with LL to come on as needed. Obviously if Stephens is fit he must play.
I thought we were unlucky generally and certainly deserved a draw. It is not all over yet and we still have a chance, remember last year.

Got that right, except they weren't just "not at their best", they are actually just not good enough if were talking about a promotion quality Championship side. Those 3 are our weak links. Ince, March, and Stephens will hopefully replace those 3 on Sunday at Derby, I hope.

Orlandi was pure rubbish both in this game and away at Forest. We looked like a ream playing with 10 men he was so bad.

JFC was poor tonight, but I still think he offers more than many give him credit for. He is still only 19 and will definitely improve.
I would like to see Ince start in place of Andrews.

It is only half time, we can still do this.
People talking about how good Derby were !!!! they only had 1 shot on target.
The luck was with them.
Our turn sunday
Keep the faith

JFC aint championship material full stop!!! He is an average Division 1 player. We must do better in the transfer window this summer to replace player's like JFC, David etc. Players out this year will be. David, Buckley, Andrews,Bresavan. Players to sign/ resign will be Ward, Kuazack, Calderón. Central Defender deffo, a couple if attacking midfielders, a couple of strikers

No creativity in final third, just kicking balls in without runners, so frustrating.
Still, we go again on Sunday. Agree with above posts, JFC out for Ince, and I'd go Solly in for Orlandi, CMS to start.
All is not lost, just need to be confident and attack like the first 20 mins last night.

Some people should give JFC a break, he is 20 years old and played in the biggest match of his career so far.

He will be a good player but is still learning his trade, doesn't have the physical presence of Ince but that is why English football is so poor, the biggest players take precedence when they don't have the technical ability of others.

This isn't a knock on Ince either as I rate him, just don't think we should blame this all on JFC

A comment made on both of our recent Sky matches was, we don't have enough players up and around the box,Derby showed us the way, they had two midfielders who regularly raced forward with the ball and either found a team mate or were brought down giving very useful set pieces.
It seems they are in a very strong position to make the final, remembering they
have beaten us in all three matches played this season.
