Albion boss Oscar Garcia has urged his players to re-write Championship history in the play-offs by overturning a first leg deficit at home against Derby County.

The Seagulls are playing catch-up in the return leg at the iPro Stadium on Sunday after losing 2-1 at the Amex last night.

No side in the second tier has come from behind in the first leg at home to reach the final and Oscar will use that as extra motivation for his players.

He said: “It’s something we can think about and it could be a good reason to motivate the players more. We have to believe, we need to believe and we will go there to get a result.”

Oscar had no complaints about Derby’s penalty, awarded by referee Roger East for a foul by Matt Upson on Craig Forsyth, which allowed Chris Martin to cancel out Jesse Lingard’s early strike for the Seagulls.

Martin’s strike against the crossbar on the stroke of half-time cannoned in off the back of Tomasz Kuszczak to give Derby the edge but Oscar felt Albion should have been given two spot-kicks themselves, for an early challenge by Forsyth on Inigo Calderon and for shirt-pulling in the second half by Jake Buxton on Leo Ulloa.

The Spaniard said: “It was a totally unfair result. We were better than them in all areas, apart from in front of goal, the most important area, but I’m really proud of our performance.

“If the ref had given us the penalty it would have been an even better start and another one in the second half but the referee didn’t give them and we know we have to improve in front of goal.”
