Albion bring in midfielder

Albion have snapped up Switzerland under-21 midfielder Nzuzi Toko on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old will officially sign for three years on July 1 when his deal with Swiss runners-up Grasshoppers expires.

He completed a medical at the Amex today.

Seagulls chairman Tony Bloom revealed the deal had been put in place before the season ended.

He said: "We concluded a deal to sign Toko before their season and ours had ended.

"Now that Toko has completed the season at Grasshoppers Zurich we are delighted to welcome him to Brighton and Hove Albion."

Welcome Nzuzi, Looks like a very tough midfielder from clips on NSC. Now have a lot of strong midfielders in Ince, Stephens, Crofts and Nzuzi. Does this mean a new manager close to being announced, or is this a continuation of hiring without managers consent?

Interesting. Heard about us being linked with him a couple of weeks ago although took with the usual pinch of salt as you can't ever trust rumours.

From what I know of the player having googled him and read other reports, he appears to be a combative and excellent tackling midfielder with plenty of promise. An interesting signing for sure. However, I hope we don't make too many signings BEFORE we appoint our next manager,,,,or is something in place?

In other words, this is another David Burke signing unless somebody currently still employed elsewhere has tipped the wink ahead of joining e.g. Paul Clement.

Personally, I think it is simply a Burke signing though.

It seems unlikely that TS or PC will be our next managers and that really does not leave to much quality out there in my opinion,Hughton would be a retrograde step and unless TB has another foreign coach in mind then I think we are in for a few more weeks wait and also the results of the FFP meetings. In the meantime the danger is any good players released will be snapped up and we will again be playing catch up.
The grasshopper signing was obviously agreed (hopefully)0 by OG prior to his leaving.
Looking on back on OG season did ok, but think he realised the job was too much and too many restraints, never looked happy and have to say some of the most dire matches I have watched at The Amex under his reign,so best he is gone I believe. Seems it won't be long before he progresses with Celta Vigo job up for grabs, perhaps this was another reason for his timing. His forte was academies but that didn't seem to interest him enough to stay. Crucial times now for the Albion again and I believe the financial situation is probably more severe than we realise.

I hope this means a summer of good signings. I would also like to see Stephen Ward back with us next season, with Lua Lua signing a new contract. The new manager won't have much to do when he is finally named, or is there something the club has forgotten to tell us.

Just a thought, who else thinks we have enough midfielders and with Will Hoskins leaving the club, shouldn't we be longing for more forwards and defenders. Lets hope so.UTA.

I wonder if this deal had Oscar's seal of approval since it was agreed apparently before our season ended and therefore before Oscar resigned. If however, as you suspect Captain H, this is a Burke signing perhaps it was 'the straw that broke the camel's back' ie finally convinced Oscar to move on. Just pure speculation on my part either way.
I agree with your comment Captain H about the club not making 'too many signings ' before the new Manager comes on board. Since we are going to have a new man at the helm (whoever it ends up being) it makes sense to let him re-build the squad as he wants rather than inherit one that Burke has largely recruited.
Welcome to the Albion Toko !

I hope this does not mean the demise of Rohan Ince, rather that he will play a more forward role, rather like his lookalike, Yaya Toure.

I think Liam Bridcutt was maybe 5'8"?

Whilst a free he will have cost us plenty in up front fees and wages. So don't anyone get the idea he will not have impacted on the transfer budget!!

Ward needs to be signed for me to rest easy!

I agree he seems to go to ground on almost every tackle , will pick up loads of bookings against poor teams and will get roasted by good players . Still I'll take him over Andrews who only ever seemed to point and slow things up.

Yes think some players will be getting in his face, but he looks quick , and mobile , the fact he goes to ground means nothing if he times his tackles and it comes from the side ,
However another player who is not the most creative, would like to see joe cole here early next week , clever player who can pass with both feet.

Looks to be a pretty decent signing to me but I guess time will tell.

The way I see it, he is here to challenge Ince for the holding midfield berth. We have Stephens and Crofts to fight it out for the driving midfielder slot but as yet we don't have anyone to fill the playmaker role... With Orlandi no longer here, I think we need 2 creative guys.
On the flanks we have Buckley, Lua Lua and March so probably one more needed here and obviously up top we only have Leo and CMS so again another 2 needed.
If Greer and Upson re sign then it's just 1 more centre half needed and if Ward returns I think we will stick with one of the young lads as back up.
Obviously Kuz needs replacing but I think Brez slot will go to Walton.

2 players for every position on the park suits me. Let's see what happens

What about Right Back?
Currently injury prone 33 and 32 year olds, both good going forward, but the good wide men of the Championship beat them both for pace in attack. A weak spot for us.

Goalie is critical to any ambitious team. They will surely sign a quality keeper, as Brez has deservedly gone and Ankergren is similarly too error prone.

Uta
What about Right Back?
Currently injury prone 33 and 32 year olds, both good going forward, but the good wide men of the Championship beat them both for pace in attack. A weak spot for us.

Goalie is critical to any ambitious team. They will surely sign a quality keeper, as Brez has deservedly gone and Ankergren is similarly too error prone.
What about Guly of Southampton? Just released at age of 32' good player

I don't disagree my friend but I don't see us have 3 RB's on the books and thus I didn't mention the position what with Calde and Bruno offered new contracts.

I'd personally have liked to see one of them kept with a younger player coming in to compete.

So a manager who had made his mind up to leave, signed a new player.

Would you prefer we sign no one until new manager is in place?
We could miss out on some good signings.
Seem to remember that is what happened last year.

Nzuzi has been identified as a good player, we have signed him on a free.

Hanover Seagull I think you are wasting your breath! It's been so obvious for so long and I'm now getting dismayed that they think all us fans are dumb! We have gone Italian style.....mega wealthy owner and his colleagues buy who they like and manager has to get on with it. Not the way to run a club in my opinion.

So if no manager is in mind yet - when he/she does get appointed and they don't fancy this guy - and decide to leave him on bench or not even in squad - money down the drain! I think we've seen a lot of that already with both Poyet's and Oscar's time in charge.....Augustein
, Obika, Dobbie, Lita, etc etc!

Tony's latest interview gave away lots of clues!

My only concern for this lad is that he will start his career with us tarnished simply because of who decided to sign him up, be it Burke, Bloom or Jones, a combination of all three or the input from the scouting unit that influenced the decision.
I hope that some on this forum won't be just waiting for the lad to make a mistake just so that they can fire a few arrows off at the suits and or others, give the kid a break and wait to see what he brings.

Anyone whose opinions are based solely on who signed a particular player rather than the ability of the player can be safely ignored.

The club have a process for the signing of players and I cannot see them deviating from that in the short or medium term. And nor should they, IMO. There is no evidence that this method is worse than letting a manager have sole responsibility.

Interesting to note, that Fat Sam Allardyce, often held up as an exemplar of the old style 'manager', has had to agree to losing a lot of his powers with regards to future signings.

Times are changing. Sheepskin jackets and cigars are out, tracksuits and dieticians are in.
