Sussex frustrated as Middlesex game is abandoned

First published in Sport by

Sussex's County Championship match against Middlesex at Merchant Taylor's School has been abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Despite improved weather on the final day the umpires pulled the plug at 1pm due to a waterlogged outfield.

Sussex had been keen to attempt to play to try to pick up some bonus points but had to settle for the five for a draw.

It lifts them back to fifth in division one ahead of their home game against Nottinghamshire at Hove on Sunday.

No play at all for 4 days is pretty unusual even in England and it does make you question the wisdom of scheduling a Championship match at a school ground, albeit a very good one.

Had the match been at Lord's I'm sure there would have been some play and, whilst a positive result was very unlikely, both sides would probably have picked up a few bonus points in addition to the basic 5 points for a draw that the teams got from the abandoned match.
