Steve Magoffin produced a stunning spell to blow away Somerset’s top order on the second morning of Sussex’s County Championship clash at Taunton.

Magoffin proved a thorn in Somerset’s side once again as he took 5-19 from ten overs to reduce the hosts to 92-5 at lunch.

The Aussie seamer has now taken 35 wickets against the Cidermen, including career best figures of 8-20 at Horsham last season.

It took him to the milestone of 400 first class wickets in his career and at one point had Somerset in even deeper trouble on 39-5.

That was still 26 short of the follow-on target after Sussex’s innings had been wrapped up after just 14 balls in the morning.

Resuming on 210-9, Ed Joyce – unbeaten on 99 overnight – completed his fifth first class century of the season before being trapped lbw by Alfonso Thomas for 103.

That total began to look better and better as Magoffin decimated the Somerset batting.

The 34-year-old struck with his second ball when he bowled Marcus Trescothick for a duck and his 17th as he had Johann Myburgh caught behind for three.

Nick Compton and Alviro Petersen also edged through to Ben Brown having made 13 and eight respectively while James Hildreth was trapped lbw for seven.

Craig Kieswetter led the Somerset fightback after Magoffin took a breather before lunch as he raced to 47 not out off just 49 balls, including a six off Will Beer, in a partnership of 53 with Peter Trego.
