Former Albion star Adam Virgo has called on fans to give Sami Hyypia time to impress as he takes charge at the Amex.

Hyypia, below right, will give his first press conference as Seagulls manager today and is also meeting club staff this week.

Local boy Virgo knows supporters will be anxious to see which signings follow and will hope for a third successive promotion push.

He backed Hyypia’s appointment but warned: “This could be the most difficult season yet at the Amex.

“Sami is an exciting appointment but a lot of players have left since last season.

“I think we might have to look at him building again next season with a view to really challenging the season after that – but I know fans don’t want to hear that.

“Sami is not here for the short term. He will have discussed signings and I think we need more pace out wide and more goals.

“Fans love new signings and they will want to be picking up The Argus and seeing which players have come in. They will want to see how the manager is being backed.

“But I see this as a season of change. If he gets us to the play-offs, great. But we just scraped in there last season, having done it comfortably the season before.”

Virgo says Hyypia’s old club could provide an example to follow.

He said: “You only have to look at Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool. They finished seventh in his first season but you could see he was trying to take things forward.

“Liverpool fans didn’t seem too disheartened and look how they did last season.”

There was a report yesterday that Liverpool were prepared for their forward player Samed Yesil to leave. He was bought from Bayer in 2012, when Sami was manager at that club for £1m. Although he has not made a first team appearance at Anfield he has appearances and goals to his credit for German international age group teams. He could be a prospective signing for the Albion? Thoughts? He did post an image of his hand luggage on line with a cat and hand-guns in it -so may require a thorough medical prior to signing!!

Wise words from Adam regarding the rebuilding that will e needed at the club. Personally I'm glad so many players have gone - too many old hands who simply weren't up to the task of getting promotion. I hope the level of entertainment is greater than last season which frankly dire at times. I didn't blame Oscar for this - after all he was working with somebody else's players.

Morning, I agree with Adam about this season is about rebuilding our squad, last season Oscar inherited poyets squad and did very well in my opinion, were as Hyppia probably needs a minimum off seven players, let's hope after todays press conference that a few new players come in over next week or two.

People who think we will get players in on loan from Liverpool because off the connection in my view won't happen, Sami will have his own list off players hopefully and lets see who comes in, I am excited about the new season but I for one will not be upset if we didn't get promotion this season as long as were in mix playing good football, most important thing is Hyppia is given time and we get stability back at our club, promotion will come but we have to be patient.
Up the Albion!!!!

Yes Adam may be right and if it takes a year of re-building so be it, although depending on exactly who we sign it may still be possible sooner.

Either way it's vital we are patient if necessary (if we can see what Sami is doing a la Rodgers / Liverpool example).

It seems Virgo and I are on the same page, this window, the winter window followed by the next pre-season window, three bites at the cake to build a promotion challenging squad. There are holes in our squad, pace and creativity is lacking along with our low goals scored tally. Our back four have been consistently good at defending but offered little by way of threat from corners and free kicks. The quality of crosses has been lacking too.

We have been good enough to reach the top six but not good enough to go further, there is much room for improvement, but you aint gonna fix eveything in just one window, and probably not two.
