Injuries piling up for Sussex
Sussex will discover the full extent of their injury crisis today with fears FOUR more players could join Mike Yardy and Jon Lewis on the sidelines.
Luke Wells, Jimmy Anyon and Matt Machan will all have scans today having picked up problems in Sussex’s defeat at Taunton. Matt Hobden will join them after damaging an ankle in a second team game on Tuesday.
Wells is almost certain to miss next week’s Championship clash with Yorkshire at Arundel due to a side strain suffered when taking a difficult catch above his head against Somerset.
Coach Mark Robinson is hopeful Machan’s knee injury, sustained when he dived to prevent a boundary at Taunton, will not be too serious but is concerned by the ankle problems experienced by fast bowlers Anyon and Hobden. Yardy Yardy underwent surgery on a torn bicep yesterday and is likely to be out for up to eight weeks but Robinson is confident Lewis will be available to face Yorkshire after having an injection in an Achilles injury last week.
With Chris Jordan and Matt Prior both away on England duty it has left Sussex’s squad stretch to the limit going into their busiest period of the season.
In total they are due to play on 12 days out of the next 15 starting with tomorrow night’s clash with Surrey at the Oval in the NatWest T20 Blast.
Robinson is keen to bring in a batsman on loan to replace Yardy but will not make any definite decisions until he knows how long his other casualties might be out for.
Robinson said: “We know Luke is going to be out for a little while but we are not sure about the others yet. We’re not expecting Machan’s to be too bad but the others are a bit worrying.
“In terms of key players being unavailable it is probably the worst I have known it since I have been in charge (2006).”
