Eastbourne top seed Agnieszka Radwanska made an instant exit from the tournament today for the third year running.
The women's world No. 4 from Poland, champion in 2008, lost a gruelling battle on centre court against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Aegon International 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Dan Evans became the first British casualty in the men's event.
The British No. 2 behind Andy Murray suffered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat in 66 minutes against German qualifier Tobias Kamke.
Evans, ranked 139 in the world, had no answer on court one to Hamburg-based Kamke, ranked 64.
Kamke's reward is a clash against defending champion and third seed Feliciano Lopez, the runner-up at Queen's last week. The Spaniard has a bye through to the second round.
