Johanna Konta suffered a heartbreaking exit from her home tournament at Eastbourne today.

The British No. 3 came within a whisker of reaching her first quarter-final on the WTA women's tour.

She took the first set against Camila Giorgi and had a match point in the third before going out to the gritty Italian 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Organisers curiously scheduled the match for court two again, where Konta beat Belinda Bencic yesterday, rather than one of the show courts.

British interest in the singles events is still alive and kicking, thanks to Heather Watson.

The British No.1 from Guernsey beat Italian sixth seed Flavia Pennetta 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in just under two hours on centre court to set up a quarter-final tomorrow against either second seed Petra Kvitova or Varvara Lepchenko.

In the men's top seed Richard Gasquet celebrated his 28th birthday with a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory against Australian Bernard Tomic.
