Sussex will be without Chris Jordan for their relegation battle against Northamptonshire on Sunday after the all-rounder was named in the England squad for the first Test against India yesterday.
There was speculation Jordan would be dropped in favour of Ben Stokes for the match at Trent Bridge after failing to take a wicket in the defeat by Sri Lanka at Headingly.
However, Jordan has retained his place alongside Sussex wicketkeeper Matt Prior with Stokes – who destroyed Sussex in their last Championship match – being added to what is now a 13-man squad.
Stokes could still play in place of Jordan but that decision would not be made until next Wednesday meaning he is unavailable to face bottom-club Northants at Hove.
Coach Mark Robinson said: “It is a difficult decision for England as Stokes is obviously an exciting talent and they want to get him in the side but none of the bowlers has done badly so it would be tough to leave any of them out.
“It’s not necessarily between CJ and Stokes as it could be (Liam) Plunkett or (Stuart) Broad who is left out. The most obvious thing to do would be to stick with the same team.”
Jordan and Prior will also be missing for the NatWest T20 Blast match against Gloucestershire at Bristol tomorrow night.
