Sami urges Ulloa to stay

The Argus: Leo Ulloa in action in the first half Leo Ulloa in action in the first half

Albion boss Sami Hyypia has held talks with Leo Ulloa over his future and urged him to stay.

The Seagulls have so far rejected three bids from Premier League newcomers Leicester City for their Argentinian goalscorer.

Hyypia reiterated his desire to keep hold of Ulloa following Saturday’s opening 5-0 friendly win at Lewes.

The Finn revealed to The Argus: “I’ve sat with him and I’ve said to him I would like him to stay. I would like to work with him and that’s it.

“I’ve said my opinion and what ever happens then happens. Hopefully when we play on August 9 against Sheffield Wednesday he is on the pitch.”

Asked about Ulloa’s reaction, Hyypia said: “The talks between him and me stay between him and me. I don’t have any intention of giving the details out.”

Hyypia fielded a different eleven in each half at Lewes, bolstered by players from the development squad.

Ulloa signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans after featuring in the first 45 minutes.

He is known to be happy and settled on the South Coast with his family and would prefer to achieve his ambition of Premier League football with Albion but has also been disappointed by the scale of investment in the squad.

Inigo Calderon, Kazenga LuaLua, Craig Mackail-Smith and two-goal Shamir Fenelon (formerly Goodwin) got Hyypia’s reign off to a winning start.

The Seagulls fly out to Pinatar in Spain on Wednesday for games against Partick Thistle on Saturday and Real Betis five days later.

We would all share LU's disappointment, however is the club adopting a measured or defeatist approach, this week may tell!! I still really think the Macca / Leo combo will be devastating, if it happens.

Look at the picture. This is the standard of play from Brighton. Absolute rubbish. Can't even kick the ball but have to crop the player. In the World Cup this would have been straight red. Still no one good enough to play in the World Cup now....nor Brighton me says.

It's nothing more than you'd expect any manager, especially a new one, to do or say and in reality, I doubt it has diluted LU's desire to play in the PL.
But we should at least be grateful for the fact SH is prepared to talk about it publicly and reflect that at least SOME attempts are being made to keep him.

Ulloas body language against Lewes showed a player with their mind on other things which he also showed in a number of games last season. A striker of his ability would be expected to score against a team of Lewes standard but he wasn't interested. Time to sell up and bring in McCormack if he hasn't already been signed by someone else. We cannot afford to carry any passengers next season.

Couple this report with the one in the Daily Mail recently saying

“Leicester City have expressed an interest in Spartak Moscow striker Yuri Movsisyan. The 26-year-old Armenian smashed 21 goals in 34 games for the Russian giants last season”,

and it looks quite promising that we will keep Ulloa. There is always going to be interest in our best players when we are consistently near the top of the league. Just something we have to get used to now.

I have listened to both TB & SH interviews and I am quietly confident players will be arriving very soon.
We have a budget, we are going to stick to that budget, which seems the correct approach
TB is running this club, and he will do the best for it.
You cannot (or should not) spend what you haven't got.
The Lewes game was a good 1st workout for the team, it gave a few of the DS lads a chance to impress.
Who knows, maybe Shamir could be a break through player this season.
I remain optimistic about the coming season

Sorry Jeff only jesting, Leo needs support up front, we need more bodies in the box and better quality crosses, if Sammi is adopting a quicker counter attacking style as has been suggested, then maybe Leo will want to be part of it, more money in his pocket may also help :-)

Apparently according to the Daily Mirror, we have put in an offer for Adam Clayton the Huddersfield midfielder. It appears that Boro have already put in an offer of £1 million plus a player however it seems that we have gone for a cash only deal. I seem to remember that he was mentioned in the January window but nothing came of it, interesting times ahead.

Mayfield, that's the point. You aren't speaking as YOU find at all!!

I used to think that you were just not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but your comments are starting to look ever more troll-like. Now you are accusing Ulloa of making a dangerous tackle that you didn't see. You therefore have no idea where the ball came from, or which way it was travelling, whether or not Ulloa had just played the ball or the many other aspects of play needed to make any sort of judgement. Maybe "the lad" was inspired by Suarez and was biting Leo's balls at the time, we don't know. Whatever happened the referee didn't book anyone as far as I know!

I think FIFA are a little distracted by the World Cup at the moment and I really don't think they (or even the FA as the governing body who would actually be concerned) will be breaking sweat as much as you are in finding something new to be critical of.

Had you thought about chatting with your many other mates? I think you'll find a column somewhere in the Croydon Advertiser for lonely hearts.

Tsk tsk Mayfield. If you're going to spread doom and gloom could you at least do it on the basis of your own informed opinion? Very poor!!
I speak as I find, and let's hope Ulloa doesn't get a retrospective punishment from FIFA for the tackle in the picture, the ball is many feet up in the air while he lunges in on the lad. We don't want a reputation as a dirty team.

UTA!!
You say that, for all we know Blatter and Platini may be on a plane bound for heathrow as we speak to investigate the challenge.

And the prize for the most cliches in one post goes to..... Sorry Jeff only jesting, Leo needs support up front, we need more bodies in the box and better quality crosses, if Sammi is adopting a quicker counter attacking style as has been suggested, then maybe Leo will want to be part of it, more money in his pocket may also help :-)
Sorry about that last post, let's give him more money and add another quality striker as well to help score a lot more this season, if Ross joins Fulham I wouldn't be surprised if they came in for CMS like they did a couple off seasons ago, just a thought!!

Good morning people.
Buying a striker should not open the door for Leo to go, we only have two and surely we need a minimum of three, now if we were to sign Baldock and Clayton, things could look different and yeah, Leo could be on his way, for the right money. Buy the pair of them for around 4M, sell Leo for north of 6M, as far north as we can go, come the end of the season this could be right for all concerned. Even if Leo went for just 6M and we got our targets for the total I have suggested, we would have a 2M profit, add a further 500K from the transfer budget and we could buy two decent center backs. One out and four in for a cost of just 500K, 'yes I do know that wages have to be paid on top of purchase prices.'

Jeff, Leo looked unhappy in the role of loan striker, new manager, more support for him on the park might see him play with more urgency, and more importantly play with a smile on his face. He's a big lad but not really keen on the physical stuff, some central defenders last season worked that out, Leo was looking at the player and not the ball and looking to the ref for support.

No I haven't lost the plot, I am aware that Clayton is a mid-field player, two strikers needed before we even think of letting Leo go.
