Sami Hyypia will discover more about his players when he has them together in Spain

First published in Sport by

Sami Hyypia expects to find out a lot about his players when they go to Spain.

The Seagulls fly to Pinatar tomorrow to step up their preparations ahead of the new Championship season which begins on August 9 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

They will play games against Partick Thistle on Saturday and Real Betis next Thursday before heading back to England.

The training time and matches will help Hyypia to reinforce to his new charges how he wants them to play.

But it will also be an opportunity for the Seagulls boss to discover more about the players at his disposal.

He said: “It’s great that we have a chance to get to know each other a little bit better.

“Most of the players were here last year so I need that more maybe than many of the players. They know each other but I don’t know them maybe well enough. It’s a good opportunity for me. We will work hard in Spain.

“It will be hot there but sometimes you play in hot conditions here as well.”

Albion have games against Crawley Town, Peterborough and Southampton when they return from Spain. It is all part of a measured pre-season programme and Hyypia says work will be stepped up a notch during their time abroad.

He added: “For the players as well it will be good to be together all day long.

“We will train a bit harder when we go there. The first week you have to be careful you don't train too much and get injuries.

“The goal is to work as hard as we can without injuries. Hopefully everybody will stay fit.”

Let's hope so Sami, the last thing we can afford is injuries with our squad currently thin on the ground. Wonder if Stephens and Crofts will be ready for the Wednesday game. Lots of rumours circulating about players, one or two in by week end ?

What are these rumours Alfie? I've heard nothing (although I don't trawl through blogs like some people, I admit). Who are these players that we are looking at? Please give me some thread of confidence.

One report has us re-signing Jesse Lingard and in the running for Villefrance, a forward from Osasuna, there's a lot of talk about Wilson Palacios coming and supposed interest in Joe Garner from Preston. Butland still a possibility and a Polish left-back from Sami's old club. All rumours though, nothing concrete.

Good news if true,... we do need to get some depth back in the squad, one or two are bound to be snapped up, I have even heard that Southampton are keen on lua Lua,.... lets hope we can resist the money men for this coming season at least.

What l cannot understand is the Albion will be going to Spain so the players can blend in Sammi's way of playing, that's great.

Then you have a bunch, well hopefully of new players coming in who will have little time to blend in before the start of the season.

Why is it in the Championship teams are buying in right now but the Albion are once again leaving it till the last minute, players need maximum pre-season time to blend in and all we'll get in is what is left, not good business sense in my opinion.

Whilst what you say has some truth within it, we cn't ignore the fact that we have a new manager, if new players were arriving as slowly this time next year, and assuming that we needed 5 or 6, then you would be completely right. Hyypia's need to evaluate what he has, and what he needs, is the cause for the slow transfer pace, would you prefer that, 'others,' were making the decisions?

Let's hope it wasn't a team building exercise or they'll be wanting you to send the bus fare back.
