Albion duo sign new deals

Jake Forster-Caskey

Christian Walton

First published in Sport

Two of Albion's brightest young stars have signed new long-term contracts.

England under-21 midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey has agreed a new three-year deal until June 2017.

And England under-19 goalkeeper Christian Walton, 18, has signed a new four-year deal which will keep him at the club until 2018.

Boss Sami Hyypia said: "The progress of a number of the younger players here in the last 12 months has been very impressive, and it's great to be able to reward that with these new contracts."

Hyypia added: “Jake and Christian both have bright futures ahead and with the right application and hard work, they can be key players for the club in the years ahead.

“Jake has already proved himself at first-team level and with England’s under-21s this summer; while Christian has made great progress in our under-21s under Simon Ireland and deservedly gained international recognition at under-19 level.

“I also hope that their progress and these improved contracts will spur on all of our young players at the academy to push forward in their careers. It shows that we are not afraid to give young players with ability the opportunity to flourish at the highest level.”

Great news about Walton, perhaps Arsenal cooled their interest or he decided to push for the number one position with the Albion. Pleased that Jake has also committed, however he does need to push on, looked lightweight, very one footed and not the quickest. Expecting thumbs down for daring to criticise an Albion player, just my opinion though.

That the Albion have seen such positive results from developing youngsters is highly encouraging all round. The club may have a lot of catching up to do compared to the likes of Southampton, but the framework is now in place for more new talent to come in and contribute in the years ahead. That is critical for the future survival of the club. Well done all concerned.

when other young lads, and their parents/agents, see the progress of the young players at Brighton, it can only help in recruiting for the future.

It is great news and I can sense trust from the players in Hyypia, he seems to have a very calming influence and from what I have heard so far speaks sense. I am glad we are not rushing in to sign players, I like the fact that Hyypia is taking his time to sign players which will fit his system. I am not going to speculate, I am just going to wait with interest in what Sami does, I hope all Albion fans follow suit.

I like many others feel JFC needs to push on, I am sure he will be a good player but at the moment is a little light weight.

I am very keen to see what Sami does with Kemy, Kemy obviously has talent, lets hope Sami gets it out because it will be like signing a new players.

All in all a very content seagull fan at the moment, we seem to have a very calm manager whose football will suit the Albion, we have a training ground facility which is the best in England, an amazing stadium, we have a board which I am proud of to be frank, we nearly lost our club, we have a board now who BHA is in their hearts and wont over spend, we will not fall victims to FFP, we will get to the premier one day, when we do it will be on the correct terms,

Splashing the cash on the player of the moment for short term gain doesn’t always work and can lead to disaster. Fantastic the club are investing in young players and training facilities. This will be the foundations of some successful campaigns. Coupled with some shrewd acquisitions is the way to more success. Last time we were in the top-flight we hadn't invested in the infrastructure. Now we have all that is needed for a long term stay. Gone are the days of training in the park an scaffolding stands. The future has arrived.

JFC made 28 appearances last season as a 19yo and has represented England at all levels.
Walton is only 18 and several prem clubs were showing interest in him.

No thumbs down,
I personally like JFC. He may not have a turn of speed but he often looks to make telling forward passes, so is a good link between defence & attack.
Remember he was still only 19 last season and made 28 appearances.

The problem with JFC's light weight is that he is neither tall nor a big build so there is only so much he can do other than a few more weights and learn to be cannier.

I agree re Agustien - he could turn out to be the classy and creative midfielder we have on occasion cried out for. It's a massive season for him, so fingers crossed he makes it.

However, I reckon that Sami will get the very best out of him in the next few years, so we shall see..............the young goalkeeper though, is a exciting prospect and I wonder if big things ar afoot for him this season?! Things seem to be coming together now and I fully expect some new additions in the next couple of weeks. Really feeling the "vibe" of the new era starting to show!! UTA.

For me JFC is a good prospect still but no more than that. Yes, he got some 1st team appearances. Yes, he scored (and at one point got a needless booking for taking his shirt off afterwards). Yes, he got barged off the ball - alot. And yes, he gave away possession - alot. And yes, I am still happy to have him sign a new contract because he's still young and when he's good he's plenty good enough.

So JFC, to prove the doubters wrong - your challenge is to keep the ball better, distribute it better, score a few, assist plenty and do it all consistently.
