Gwion Edwards is determined to savour more career highs after joining Crawley Town on a permanent basis.

The Wales under-21 international penned a two-year deal to become the Reds’ tenth summer signing yesterday.

Crawley have paid an undisclosed fee for the winger who became one of their prime summer targets after a successful loan spell last season.

Edwards played six games for John Gregory’s side at the end of last season, scoring on his debut against Tranmere and then on his full debut three days later against Leyton Orient.

The 21-year-old then got on the scoresheet for Wales under-21s against England at Swansea in May to complete a successful season which also included a loan stint at St Johnstone.

After joining Swansea as an under-15s player, Edwards came through the ranks with the Swans and was on the bench for the first team but never made a senior appearance.

With his chances seemingly limited again going into the new Premier League season, Edwards jumped at the chance to return to Crawley.

He said: “Obviously having been here before I know the set-up and the way the manager wants us to play.

“I really enjoyed my time last season and to score my first league goal during that loan spell was a highlight of my career so far.

“Hopefully there are a few more highlights to come. The manager has rebuilt the squad this summer but I think there is a lot of potential here and I’m looking forward to helping Crawley kick on in League One this season.”

Edwards was not signed in time to play in last night’s opening pre-season friendly with Billingshurst but could feature away to another County League side, Oakwood, on Tuesday.

Gregory, meanwhile, has revealed the part played by another former Swan, Reds centre-back Joe Walsh, in winning the race to sign Edwards.

The Reds boss said: “Other clubs were keen because he did well for us at the end of last season but he likes this club and although there aren’t too many of the lads left from last season he does, of course, know Joe Walsh really well.

“We all know what Gwion can give us but I think there is a lot more to come from him. He’s at a great age to develop his game and really move his career forward and I’m sure our supporters will be as pleased as I am that we have him now for the next two years.”
