Albion focus turns to new faces as Ulloa prepares to complete record move

Leo Ulloa is expected to sign for Leicester today

David Stockdale has been linked with Albion

First published in Sport by

Leo Ulloa is set to complete his record-breaking move to Leicester City today – as Albion look to add to their squad for the new season.

Ulloa undergoes a medical in the East Midlands this morning before putting pen to paper on a deal which could net the Seagulls £10 million.

His transfer will be a record fee for the Foxes and the biggest sum ever received by the Seagulls.

A representative for Ulloa said his off-field team had “a few details to finalise” last night or today but expected the transfer to go through with no hitches.

Albion have been linked with Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale as they plan for the new campaign.

Stockdale, who has a year left on his contract, travelled to Crawley for the Cottagers’ pre-season friendly on Saturday.

But he did not get playing time.

Cottagers boss Felix Magath declined to comment on the 28-year-old keeper’s future after the game.

A source close to Fulham said it would be a surprise if Stockdale were to leave.

Chris O’Grady, the striker signed from Barnsley for an undisclosed fee believed to be about £500,000, links up with his new Albion colleagues for the first time in training today.

Meanwhile, trialist George Cole, a midfielder from Chelsea, scored for Albion’s development squad as they drew 1-1 in a friendly with Stoke City on Saturday.

Trialist defenders Ibou Touray and Danny Pappoe, released recently by Everton and Chelsea respectively, both played for the Seagulls.

I thought that the Argus was broken, there was no news yesterday. Anyway, we need to spend at least £3M of the Ulloa money just to compete next season.

you guys just getting up as I start to think about going to bed.

We should not forget that the club would have set a budget for transfers for the coming season, money which had nothing to do with Leo going.
If, by using our budget, and possibly a little of the money from the sale of Leo, would it be such a bad thing if we used the rest of the Ulloa money to slash our losses fugure? We will have loanees too, or at least I would imagine we will.

The FFP requires us to break even over a period of time, once we do, and show that we can maintain that control, would we not be in a good place? Right now we have to set aside about 3 million for FFP purposes.

Selling Ulloa is a very good bit of business, he did look a little bit disgruntled towards the end of the season and it would only have got worse if we'd blocked a move to the Premiership, it's stated in Sky Sports championship news that Chris Woods is about to depart Leicester with a host of championship clubs interested!? I do hope we could somehow link him into the deal, he was very good when he was on loan with us and has really progressed well since then....hoping for the best robbery since Dick Turpin.

Doesn't everything seem so much rosier now that things are looking so much clearer. No need for doom and gloom, we're starting to put together a strong squad. If the season started tomorrow we could field a strong side. As a natural optimist I already think we should be able to challenge for a play off berth this season... and with new signings due to strengthen and give us more cover and depth, who knows what 2014/5 could bring?!

Really looking forward to 9th August... and beyond!!

I can understand and share everyone's concern that we 'must' meet FFP. However, what does frustrate me is the fact big clubs like City and Barcelona (obviously a diffetent league) can lose what ever they want and face no real footballing implications. The only way we can compete is through loan players coming to our club for its stadium and training facilities. These along with experienced journeymen are the only way we will realistically join the top flight and reap the financial rewards that will alow us to spend big on quality players. So let's accept that and not be disheartened if we don't sign a big name player - bonus if we do!

I'd be very pleased with either Wood or Becchio but my preference would be Adam Clayton's team mate, Vaughn... Best striker I saw at the Amex last season and Huddersfield missed him terribly when he got injured.
Given we are potentially looking for 2 strikers, I'd any 2 of the 3 I mention.

In other areas of the pitch, I'd still like Ward back and would be very pleased to see Stockdale or Butland arrive to fill the goalkeepers slot.

I think we still need a decent centre half too and given the way Redknapp and Bruce are signing centre halfs, we might just see someone like Bruce junior or Dunne become available.

In midfield we seem to be after a winger and a creative midfielder. I think the Liverpool lad, Iberia would be an incredibly good loan signing if we could get him ut if not then I'd love to see us try and get Conway back.
As for the creative midfielder... Clayton has already been mention and would be a good shout.

I genuinely think that Leo's fee might just haved changed our season. Don't get me wrong, we need to spend it but if we do then we might just surprise a few people again. WTch this space.

Can't agree about Wood, Alan. Sorry. He was distinctly average with us and got a few lucky goals early on with Leicester but then reverted to form. In my opinion he is nowhere near good enough for us. He might go to Blackpool as they need extra donkeys on the sands this year. ;-)

I do hope we could somehow link him into the deal, he was very good when he was on loan with us and has really progressed well since then....hoping for the best robbery since Dick Turpin.
Can't agree about Wood, Alan. Sorry. He was distinctly average with us and got a few lucky goals early on with Leicester but then reverted to form. In my opinion he is nowhere near good enough for us. He might go to Blackpool as they need extra donkeys on the sands this year. ;-)
Or there again, he might go to Donkeyster.
Very funny but why the long face?

I didn't think Wood performed to badly for us, certainly better than some of the loan strikers we've had in. Isn't he more in the style of O'Grady, big and physical number 9 type. My guess is that Sami will only play one centre forward and use a number 10 type, alongside him, perhaps a Lingard style of player. Ps, I don't like using number nine, number ten language, but you'll know what I mean hopefully. Excuse me, must go, I need a number 1.

SMF20 thank you for your detailed post with thoughts on whom we might sign.
With less than 3 weeks to go until the Wednesday game clearly we need to get moving on the recruitment front not that I am suggesting any panic buying.
I trust that Burke and Co are really working all hours to help SH secure the new signings he wants much depends on them. However now that we are receiving the funds from Ulloa's sale and Bridcutt and Barnes's there really should be no excuses for DB and his team not performing.
Over the weekend I noticed that we ere linked potentially with 2 or 3 players including Stockdale, the young Liverpool defender Kelly who has slipped down their pecking order and Clayton who Middlesborough are also interested in (People newspaper). All 3 would be good options as would Wood whom other posters have mentioned. Having brought O'Grady any other strikers we sign need to have reasonable pace and mobility amongst other attributes and Wood meets such criteria
I also agree with your suggestion of Ibe the young Liverpool winger who played well last Saturday against Preston.
Talking of wingers I saw on the club website that Monakana did not turn out for the DS in their 1 - 1 draw with Stoke. I wonder if that means either that he will play against Crawley or that he will go out again on Loan ? He did feature quite prominently for the DS against Cartegena last week
I look forward to hearing over the next week or so of various new players being signed.
Onwards and Upwards.

Just seen a rumour that Clayton is going to Notts Forest for £2 million - don't know if there is any substance to the report.
Like your idea of Wilson BHA getting a couple of good young players from Top Premier League teams certainly worth considering for this season. It worked quite well for Derby last year.

Cracking suggestion - one of the best I've heard -- him and Chris Burke would be good - but Burke wants tonnes of money! George Thorne has gone to Derby .....

I see that Monakana as I mentioned in the above post might be happening has gone out on Loan. He has joined Aberdeen until January - I hope he gets more game time than he did at Crawley. I suppose his wages are 'off the budget' for a few months then.
So far since the window opened we have sold 3 forwards (assumes Ulloa's move to Leicester is completed) but only brought one in - O'Grady.
Really hoping for some inward movement on the transfer front especially on the attacking side and of course a GK.

A player that i would like to see play for the Albion would be Julian Green, I don't expect anyone has heard of him but i'm sure that Sami has. He is a 19 year old winger who plays for Bayern Munich reserves but is breaking into the first team, Bayern want to send him out on a season long loan.
He came on as a sub for the USA and scored a great goal against Belgium in the world cup. It would be great to have him play for us for a season.

Evening mate, That's a great shout I had heard off him but didn't realize he played for Munich, it's always better to think outside the box, I've suggested to lads from united, Wilson and Lawrence both broke in to the united first team under Giggs, but will probably be sent out on loan, both held in high regard at united,

I was underwhelmed by Wood when he was here, but he was just 19 then. He has certainly improved and it might take him a couple more seasons, but sooner or later I reckon he is going to be hitting the back of the net on a very regular basis.

Didn't know that about Lawrence - TBH I would be astounded if he turned up anywhere other than the PL -- but a nice dream all the same! Clayton on the other hand is surely a possibility and a very good one. Burke would be a similarly immense signing since Thorne isn't available - think we have a great LB in Chicksen - saw him play for the reserves that night Macca scored two and thought he was terrific, ( and a winger named Jimmy Muitt - outstanding ) but please resign Wardy. Becchio is a quality that will lead BHA out onto a different level - be the very best of any news for me! But hey - Sami will surely have a few ideas ...

Mancgulled
