Albion boss Sami Hyypia has revealed the part played by fellow Finn Antti Niemi in the capture from Fulham of goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Goalkeeping coach Niemi and Stockdale were rivals for the gloves at Craven Cottage.

Hyypia said: "We are delighted to have completed David’s signing from Fulham, and I am pleased to welcome him to the club.

"It is a transfer we have been working on for some time – and David is a goalkeeper with excellent pedigree. He has got very good experience of the Premier League and Championship, but at 28 is in his prime.

"Antti knows David very well from their time together as players at Fulham. He knows his strengths and attributes, and David was on the fringes of the England senior squad not too long ago.

"Alongside Casper Ankergren and Christian Walton, David’s arrival means we are satisfied with our goalkeeping options ahead of the new season.

"We still have some work to do in other areas in terms of recruitment, but we are making good progress and this is an excellent signing and another quality addition to the squad."

Stockdale is Albion’s fourth signing of the summer, joining his former Craven Cottage teammate Aaron Hughes, midfielder Nzuzi Toko and striker Chris O’Grady.

Shame Antti Niemi is not part of the goalkeeping trio instead of Ankers.

Please never let him keep goal for us again.

Well done Mr Grummitt. One of the few predictions reported on here to actually materialise. Keep your ear to the ground, my friend!
This signing will give a much needed lift to players and supporters of the club alike, with apparently more signings to come. Better late, than never!

Most positive signing of the summer (so far). A player who has played at the top level of league football but is at the right age to improve further. If the price of around 1 Million is correct then it is a bit of a steal. Quality left back, creative / quick footed midfielder and stellar striker now needed.

Not a bad keeper though the fact that he hasn't been snapped up by a premier league club by now and we've signed him for a mere million suggests he isn't quite up to premier standards but certainly a good championship standard, though admittedly not quite as good as Kusczak. We've clearly set out our stall to consolidate championship status and anything more is a bonus. Now the rest of the Ulloa and Bridcutt money must be ploughed into signing an arsenal of attacking players to avoid a season of disappointment and turmoil. Over to you Messrs Bloom Barber and Burke.

I don't know - we make a great signing IMHO and some people just have to knock him?!? His pedigree says he's every bit as good as TK and at 28 is at the height of his prowess. And he is good at coming out of his goal to act as a sweeper. Good kicking feet as well, it appears. I'm happy with this one. Now can we PLEASE get some of the others in?

I don't think Mayfield Sweeper is being, shall we say, entirely sincere in his posts! Mr Sweeper knows full well we've signed a potential upgrade.

As for my view, I agree entirely with Joel's Grandad and The Phantom. At £1m he's a relative bargain. Great work 'suits'!.....oh no it's only the duds that the suits sign, isn't it?!
