Albion have confirmed the signings of former Chelsea duo Danny Pappoe and George Cole for their development squad.

Centre-half Pappoe and attacking midfielder Cole have agreed one-year deals after impressing on trial during pre-season.

Under 21s coach Simon Ireland said: "Trial periods are always high pressure for a player because you are on a limited timescale to show what you can do, but both Danny and George have slipped seamlessly into the group and that has paid dividends on and off the pitch."

Ireland's youngsters kick-off their campaign as a new category one side against Blackburn Rovers at Culver Road, Lancing, on August 18 (7pm).

every silver lining has a cloud. Signing players for the DS as opposed to signing them for the squad are two completely different beasts, and to link them is just not on. Welcome lads.

We are building for both now and the future. Attracting players from Chelsea youth system shows how far our academy has come. With the progression of youth into the first team this will only improve our chances of hiring real talent from other clubs. These are exciting times....Trolls aside lets enjoy the next few years! It hasn't been better for a long time

Youngsters should always be made most welcome for they are our future--and hopefully will turn out to be excellent First Team players in time.

well mate that might be what you meant by your comment, but it's not how it reads. The comment comes across as rather dismissive of the young lads, yeah ok we got you two so what, where are the squad lads we need?

Mickey could the club be holding back, 'GOOD,' new until tomorrow,is that even worth thinking about?

Getting the right lads into the DS is really important, not just for tomorrow, but also for today. The opposition for the young lads will step up big time this season, our new status ensures that, it will not serve us well to have them getting a slapping every match. Just as if/when, the senior team gets to the prem and will need better players, so does our DS.

Welcome to the Albion both Danny and George. This is a good opportunity so make the most of it.
I have long been a criticiser of both the PL and Sky because of the obscene money floating around the system and in a way the fact we don't see much of it.
However, the system lets us pick up decent young players from clubs like Chelski that we can develop hopefully into our first team. If these two do as well as Bridcutt and Ince then I'll be well happy.
Oh, and no more Dennis Waterman jokes please. UTA

You make it sound like we're feeding off poor scraps here. If they were from say West Broms DS then you may have a point. But these are from one of the big hitters. Chelsea as a club will have plenty of choice when it comes to attracting youngsters. Their 'not quite' is another clubs 'definitely', and that's where we are at the moment and rightly so. I don't think of LB and RI as scraps from someone elses table. Look at Lallana - taken on by Soton as a youngster, not by a 'top' PL side at that time - he hasn't done too bad now has he?

I read it like that too, but happen to agree with his point also, but on the other hand to be fair to the Argus they can only report what's happening, I think an awfull lot. People are feeling negative having paid good money for season tickets, 1901 club membership and the like, only to get one week away from season start with vey few of the replacements for the end of season exodus, and only 4 days away from the first game.
Just because people on here don't happen to have a blind belief that the glass is full all the time doesn't make them a Troll.

West Bromwich Albion have an outstanding Academy, Gilbertthecat, one of the best in the country. Their young talent is enticed away by the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool on a regular basis, often before they have got anywhere near the first team.
You could have picked a better example!

Didn't realize that Ward was so green and eco-friendly? Do you think that the Albion suits agreed to plant a few more trees, or that it was it a more global deal that dealt with Amazonian rain forest and carbon footprint issues?

NSC posting that the Ward saga has been sorted barring a medical, announcement in a day or two?
About as in the know as the Argus!
The ward deal is a done deal according to twitter just waiting for ward to put pen to paper and sign a tree year deal. Also these two young kids look good hope they get some first team action. The future looks bright. Now bring on the new season and hope for promotion.
Didn't realize that Ward was so green and eco-friendly? Do you think that the Albion suits agreed to plant a few more trees, or that it was it a more global deal that dealt with Amazonian rain forest and carbon footprint issues?
On the contrary. He was responding to an advert' for 'Tree Fellers Wanted.'

The GazZa strip? Is that from the same night out as the infamous Dentist's Chair binge in the 90s?

Great goal and subs performance from Jesse Lingard to help United lift their first trophy.

Would love to see him back with us for a whole year with no 'must play' cause.!

On another note: Brendan Rodgers' article in The Mirror today where he talks about 'Directors of Football' and how he told his owner, John Henry, that he refused to work with one as he felt it necessary that the players know they have only one boss. Echoes what I've been saying on here ever since it was first decided by Tony Bloom to hire one.

I believe it would be the biggest and most positive move for Bloom to end this at our club. And I repeat, it is not a personal vendetta against David Burke. It simply is a fact that it always causes problems.
