Albion appear to have lost out to Middlesbrough in their pursuit of Huddersfield midfielder Adam Clayton.
An Argus source in the North-East has confirmed Clayton is expected to sign for Boro this afternoon, subject to a medical, with a fee of £1.5 million rising to a potential £2 million and personal terms reportedly agreed.
The Leeds-born 25-year-old has been a target for Albion since January, when they had a £1 million bid turned down by Huddersfield.
The Seagulls stepped up their persistent interest after the £8 million departure of striker Leo Ulloa to Leicester.
