Boss John Gregory has challenged Charles Banya to prove he is worth a long-term deal at Crawley.

Banya became Gregory’s 17th signing of the summer when he was rewarded for a successful trial with an initial one-month contract.

The former Fulham striker is expected to be on the bench for tomorrow’s opening League One clash at Barnsley with Gregory’s options up front restricted due to an injury to Matt Harrold while Gavin Tomlin is also doubtful.

Gregory said: “I am very excited about this boy. He is very, very quick and has got an eye for goal so he is one of them I just can’t ignore. It is only a short-term deal but it is up to him to turn it into a long-term deal.”

Banya, 20, failed to make a first team appearance at Craven Cottage but played eight games on loan at Woking last season.

He caught Gregory’s eye in friendlies against Three Bridges, Woking and Chelsea and his ability to play up front or on either wing convinced the Reds boss to give him an opportunity.

Gregory added: “He did well during his time at Fulham but they had to let a lot of players go after they were relegated last season. That is a shame for him but it benefits us.”
