Skipper tips O'Grady to make life tough for his old club

Chris O'Grady is mobbed after scoring the winner in a Steel City derby at Hillsborough

O'Grady in action for Albion

Gordon Greer reckons Albion’s new striker Chris O’Grady could haunt his old club Sheffield Wednesday at the Amex today.

Skipper Greer expects the former Barnsley marksman to be a vigorous handful for Championship defences this season.

O’Grady scored nine goals in 53 outings in the Championship and League One for Sheffield before joining Barnsley.

Albion bought him from Barnsley for £500,000 last month to beef up their attacking options.

Greer told The Argus: “He’s come in and he’s done well. He’s a handful, a man-mountain.

“We played against him last year and he works really hard and he is really strong physically.

“So it’s something different we’ve got now that we maybe never had previously.”

Greer is prepared for a stern examination from the Owls on the opening day of the season.

He said: “They are a really good, hard-working side. They struggled a bit last year.

“When we played them away I thought we played quite well but they beat us 1-0. It will be a tough game and a good first test for us at the Amex.

“We’ve been training for six weeks, all geared up to this first game. We’ve been training hard and hopefully we can go out there and put on a good performance. The main thing is that we get the win.”

Hope the same goes for every time COG plays against one of his former teams... that alone would probably get us into a play off place by the end of the season!! 😉

A natural replacement for Barnes? We will see, he's a hard worker and that will endear him amongst the Albion faithful. The striker to get us 20 goals, can't see it personally, still need that marquee forward to really ignite our season.

CMS could still be the striker we're looking for!! We need more creativity in midfield and a someone who can provide a defence splitting ball.

9 goals in 53 games, with such a prolific strike rate it's a wonder Real Madrid didn't snap him up. Thanks Burke brigade you must be really pleased with yourselves.

That's 9 in in 53 BEFORE joining Barnsley. He notched another 15 in 39 games in the Championship despite Barnsley getting relegated! So I imagine yes, Burke brigade will be pleased and so am I.

Agree about CMS. As for a creative midfielder who can provide a defence splitting ball, we already have one...Kemy Agustien. Do not be surprised to see him involved today, he played a part in all pre season friendlies and I thought he looked sharp against Southampton.

Last season was one of the poorest championships ever, we were nondescript for most of it but still made the play offs. Most of us could have scored a few last season.
