10:44pm

10:43pm

9:44pm

Nervy for a while but job done in the end.

LuaLua proved decisive.

9:35pm

Albion were comfortable at 1-0 but added a second on 90 minutes when MACKAIL-SMITH finished a one-on-one set up by LuaLua's pass.

9:25pm

The first goal under Hyypia’s management comes from a centre-back. LuaLua’s drive was blocked at the expense of a left-wing corner. LuaLua played it short, Calderon chipped a ball to the far post and DUNK arrived to head down and back across the keeper.

9:17pm

Att: 6,595 (164 away)

9:16pm

Decent chance for Dunk as he sends a free header just too high from LuaLua's corner on 72 minutes.

9:11pm

Cheers as LuaLua comes on.

He replaces Agustien.

9:10pm

Clever work by Bruno and it might have brought a breakthrough. Out towards the right, he took his time, assessed options and chipped a precise cross which O’Grady headed over.

Maybe the cross just needed a bit more pace on it.

Cheltenham have sent on Haworth for Gornell.

9:06pm

Very high and wide by Mackail-Smith from long distance but this is a bit better from the hosts.

9:02pm

Chicksen gets forward and chips up a tempting cross which keeper Carson fingertips to safety at the far post.

And then a real chance. O’Grady’s clever pass sends Agustien through on goal but he seems to get the ball tangled up in his feet. Eventually a Cheltenham player tries to hack it away, it hits Agustien and the rebound is grabbed by Carson.

8:59pm

Flurries of mild excitement at both ends as Dunk has to clear away from Harrison in the home box, then Chicksen gets on the end of a ball into the Robins area and sees his effort charged down.

Cheltenham are just starting to come into the game a bit more with Braham-Barrett keen to attack down the left.

8:51pm

Early Albion corner headed away as they attack an (empty) North Stand.

8:48pm

Second half is under way

8:32pm

Albion had two corners just before the interval which brought nothing.

8:28pm

Calderon conceded Cheltenham’s second corner, which Stockdale just about held on to at full stretch.

Play, though, was mainly in the Robins’ half - but without much to excite.

8:19pm

Albion are having plenty of the ball and trying to pass their way through a well-organised defence.

8:18pm

Biggest cheer of the last ten minutes was for Hyypia leaving his seat to stand right on the edge of his technical area for a few moments.

I think the award of a throw to Cheltenham right in of him moved Hyypia to emerge but the fans were glad to see him.

8:12pm

Albion still on top and having some joy down the right.

Calderon’s cross fizzed across goal and then a ball by Bruno was met by the head of O’Grady, but not with sufficient pace to test Carson who held easily.

8:05pm

Good work by Forster-Caskey to get away down the left and cross low. Calderon was right up there in the penalty area and his shot was blocked. He then charged down the resulting clearance and the ball ricocheted just wide with keeper Carson motionless.

8:00pm

Right on cue, Chicksen joins an attack, cuts inside and shoots not too far wide from the edge of the box.

7:59pm

CMS has been quite central and close to O'Grady so far.

They look to be playing as a pair.

Agustien is in behind them and Calderon and Chicksen bombing forward to provide with.

is cms part of a two man attack, or in a wide slot as part of a 3?

7:57pm

7:56pm

Albion attacking North to South in this first half - although both stands behind the goals are closed tonight, along with the East Upper.

7:55pm

Chicksen helped force an early corner down the left which Dunk headed over.

7:53pm

Cup football tonight at the Amex and confirmation first of all of how those three full-backs are playing for Albion.

As we predicted, Calderon is at right-back, Chicksen at left-back and Bruno on the right of midfield.

Of course, Calderon will often be further ahead of Bruno down the right given the way Hyypia has Albion playing.

If there was a game to lose its tonight. Rubbish competition, team not great either except Sami playing Bruno in midfield will please my season ticket holder next to me as this is something he was advocating all last season. His reasoning, he is a poor defender but has a good pass and is our best technically gifted player..... oops he will be gone if a scout sees this now, before window shuts ;-).

Hi mate.

I see Sheff wed have signed Stevie May from St.Johnstone, looks a good player.

Gone are the days when we signed talented players, it ended when they took the responsibility from the manager and gave it to the suits.

Bring back Gus and Dick knight, who should have a stand named after him not just a bar.

A good performance against a really good, well organised Cheltenham side. Patient and professional.
I always thought we would stand firm, and wear them down, then bring on our impact sub LuaLua and hit them with late goals. And so it proved.
Several outstanding performers tonight: Dunk, CMS, Greer and Chicksen all high class.
A tough effective performance from O'Grady who will surely net 15 times this season.
Best of all, Hyypia has the monkey off his back and is now a winning Albion manager.
Birmingham will be looking at this performance and getting butterflies in their stomachs ahead of saturday's battle.

Try really going to a game for once. That was 80mins of pure rubbish.Things will be very different on Saturday against a Championship team.
I'm a ST holder but I didn't fancy a 200 mile round trip for a round one game. Is that all right with you? UTA

Just how senile does one person need to be ,to think a single LD goal against a second string league two side in a cup notorious for fifth rate football have to be ,to think he and us are saved !.
Some people are never happy. A win is a win. UTA
A win against Sheffield Wednesday is a win to celebrate ,not a win against a team below us ,who couldn`t be bothered to play a full side ,in a cup they cant win . Your so sure of the importance of your comments ,it`s noticeable that you don't bleat so much when we play and lose to teams as above , you are just perpetuating a believe that if you close your eyes to what is happening to our Great club it will simply go away ...it wont ,and that is why I stick my neck out ,you can settle for second best ,I think we deserve THE BEST .
Make sure you take a nice packed lunch on the costa express. Saturday you licker. Jesus christ

Well done to Sami and the players for producing a win from a tricky encounter.
At this moment we are on a par with decent League 1 sides, so would expect to dispatch League 2 opposition.
We should be under no illusion that this is evidence of progress in the quest to become a competitive Championship team.
It will take significant investment in the squad combined with a League win to produce any real sense of optimism.

Not a great win, granted, but a win nonetheless.
I've seen us play better and lose so am happy with winning ugly.
I have nothing against people posting their opinions, that's what the thread is all about, but please, just because someone is of a differing opinion to you, is it right to condemn them.
I don't think any of our team are 'rubbish', they are professional football players and I am not and as such I am not qualified to draw a comparison.
It cannot be denied there is room for improvement, SH himself has stated as much, and we are certainly lacking in certain areas, again something SH has acknowledged.
Lets hope this win, regardless of the opposition will help to increase confidence among the players, alas for some posters on here, the cup is always half empty.
By definition, is it not the supporters job to 'support'?

Tonights match.
Workmanlike job done.
positives .... defence was solid, Chicksen looked quite good going forward, Kaz made the difference when he came on.
Dunk scoring which will upset a few.

minuses .... Little inventiveness in midfield, still too slow and predictable moving from defence to attack.

We need a top target man and a creative midfielder.

I agree, it was a great result for Crawley, but as stated in an earlier post, we cannot judge a season by a cup win, I was merely referring to the fact that this win could serve to swell confidence among the players, and could as a result have a positive effect on our league performance. but that remains to be seen.
I supported and watched the Albion when we were 'lower league rubbish' and this team, however poor on the night, are certainly better, but that's just my opinion!
