Izale McLeod scored an extra-time winner as Crawley claimed another Championship scalp by beating Ipswich Town 1-0 in the Capital One Cup.

The game had seemed destined to go to penalties when McLeod popped up in the 111th minute to scramble home from close range.

It was the second time the former MK Dons striker had struck late on to decide a match after netting in the 1-0 win at Barnsley on Saturday.

The result made it a perfect start to the campaign for Reds but they were grateful to some fine saves by goalkeeper Brian Jensen and the woodwork.

It was also the third Championship outfit Reds had knocked out of the competition in the last three seasons having overcome Millwall and Bolton Wanderers three years ago.

Boss John Gregory made two changes to the side which won 1-0 at Barnsley on Saturday – one enforced the other tactical.

Bobson Bawling replaced injured skipper Josh Simpson in midfield while Sonny Bradley made his debut at left-back in place of Ryan Dickson.

Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy was forced to make eight changes to the team which beat Fulham 2-1 in the Championship on Saturday due to injuries with five players being handed their debuts.

It was no surprise the under-strength Tractor Boys made a sluggish start as Crawley enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half without really threatening to open the scoring.

Izale McLeod went closest when he fired a shot wide from 20 yards but otherwise Ipswich coped comfortably with Crawley’s 4-5-1 formation.

The visitors were restricted to rare forays forward but still created easily the best chance of the first 45 minutes. Alex Henshall picked out Frank Nouble with a delightful ball into the box from the left but the striker sidefooted wide from eight yards with only Brian Jensen to beat.

Ipswich upped the tempo after the break with Jensen called into serious action for the first time to keep out a low effort from Nouble.

The big Dane also had his palms stung by Paul Taylor from range with the Crawley defence having to scramble the loose ball away.

Jensen was far the busier of the two keepers as he threw himself full length to keep out a shot from substitute Balint Bajner.

Reds were also saved by the woodwork when Teddy Bishop’s thunderous 30-yard strike crashed against the underside of the bar.

The home side could have snatched it right at the death when Conor Henderson’s clever through ball put McLeod away but his shot lacked the power to beat Bartosz Bialkowski.

However, McLeod made no mistake in the second period of extra-time when he reacted well to stab home a loose ball inside the six yard box after his initial effort was blocked by Bialkowski.
