Albion take former Barnsley playmaker on trial

Paddy McCourt in action for Celtic

Paddy McCourt in action for Celtic

First published in Sport by , Chief sports reporter

ALBION have taken former Barnsley playmaker Paddy McCourt on trial.

McCourt has been training with the Seagulls this week and is expected to feature in a development squad friendly at Southend today.

The 30-year-old Northern Ireland international caught the eye when he scored and ran the game for Barnsley in their 2-1 win at the Amex last season.

He was released after the Tykes were relegated and had to cut their wage bill.

Free agent McCourt will team up again with ex-Barnsley colleague Chris O'Grady if he does enough to earn a deal.

Boss Sami Hyypia will be hoping the former Celtic player can bring some midfield invention to his squad.

McCourt was in the crowd at the Amex last night to watch O'Grady and Albion defeat Cheltenham 2-0 in the Capital One Cup with second-half goals from Lewis Dunk and Craig Mackail-Smith.

Defo could do a job. May not be th first name on the team sheet but could provide us with that ability to go past peaple and also to slip a cute ball through to the on rushing CMS. The second goal last night is what CMS is all about - playing on the shoulder of the defence and timing runs to perfection, all we need is players to find him as Lua Lua did once on. In the first half Smith was begging to be played in but with a COG up alongside him the ball was held up more rather than being played through so a player of Mcourt's guile could be just what we need. Along with other types obviously!

He probably gave the most impressive individual performance by any player at the Amex last season & is no doubt the type of player our midfield needs. He strolled through the game without any of our midfield able to get near him, especially Bridcutt.
However my concern would be that I didn't hear about too many more performances like that from him throughout the season & Brighton were generally one of the better teams to play against for creative players because we backed off & gave teams time on the ball, plus the fact our pitch is ideal for technical players.
Why has no other club come in for him ? There must be a reason why a player with this talent was playing for Barnsley (who got relegated) & is now a free agent.
It seems to me that the club have suddenly realised, especially after Saturday that a creative midfielder is desperately needed & suddenly remembered a guy who had a great game against them last season. The fact he is on trial suggests it is a last minute thought & we have no other player of this type on our radar.
Up until this piece of news I was still assuming that the club had identified their targets & were (very) slowly) working to bring them to the club. Now, like a lot of other people on here I am thinking there is no real transfer plan.

Sorry guys, I said on another thread that I'd never heard of him but now that I've been reminded I do remember the name from the Amex last season. Could be useful and just what TB and PB are looking for - FREE!
But you do have to ask, is he consistent? Why was he released from Barnsley (unless his wages there were very high)? Is he being signed because Sami knows he will fit in with his style of play or is it just because he's FREE?
I would say though, that if he is seemingly prepared to take a pay cut to keep playing football then why are we still chasing Ward who seems determined to turn us down on pay grounds? Or is it Wolves who are holding the deal up? If Jacket really wants to get rid of him then he should just let him go for FREE! Our suits would love that.
Can someone also tell me if the Solly rumours are true?

Would be an excellent addition to the Albion team. He's a luxury player for sure, but can have a huge impact on any game when the mood takes him.

Dare I say it...a less pacey replacement for Buckley,

Getting good players from champ relegated teams is ok if we are looking to stay in the championship.
The issue here is that if we did do a Burnley then how many of our team could hack it int the pl? Well I count about 3 so we would need a completely new team. So this year we are just going to survive cos the suits will have a real problem if we did miraculously go up
