Ward couldn't turn down Premier League

Stephen Ward has joined Burnley

Stephen Ward has joined Burnley

First published in Sport

Albion target Stephen Ward last night admitted the lure of the Premier League was irresistible after signing a three-year deal at new boys Burnley.

Ward, who spent last term on loan with the Seagulls and looked poised to return, said: “I don’t think I could have picked a better place than Turf Moor and obviously to come to the Premier League is a massive pull as well.

“Once you get a taste of it you want to play as much Premier League football as you can.”

Meanwhile former Albion goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak is keeping sharp by training with Oldham Athletic.

Good luck Stephen. Footballers have a short career. I think most people would want to play at a higher level for more wages. We can't begrudge him that.

I say give Chicksen a run for 10 games (which he's never had). If he doesn't cut the mustard pick up the best player we can afford on loan.

I think some one here want a reality check,
Some seem to think he should take a drop in wages of 25% move to the most expensive part of the uk! and join a side that has sold its quality ..
The rebuilding programme has a very very long way to go,
We only need to look 6 months down the road and look at the age of our defence, lua lua out of contract and cms who is on 17k a week also free to walk,
We have a fairly easy 5-6 games .... After that we hit a tricky 5-6 games,
The season will be cast if we don't get 4-5 players in ASAP ..
I won't mention robert codner, but he is solly march agent, by all accounts he is trying to work a deal at various clubs to take solly..
The next ten days will need sami on the phone to various managers, or we will be deep in the mire.

He wanted big wages and I am fairly sure did not forsee training with Oldham. If you are suggesting we should have paid a huge salary to someone who it appears others do not really want then I have to say I disagree.
His current situation will temper his demands but could we have waited that long just in case, I think not.

Turf Moor is very atmospheric. The burgers are better there than at the amex and the catering is much better. And Burnley can offer more money. It's what you might call a 'no brainer'.

It means he gets a game every week and works for a very decent Manager who plays a big part in having the players he wants at his club. It would work for most!

CMS on 17k a year....didn't know that. I think he has a lot to prove this year, he runs round like a headless chicken at times, ok he scores once or twice but the rest of his game is so-so. If he doesn't change I can see him going down the road in 2015. Anyway no more doom and gloom from me, good luck to the boys today at St Andrews. UTA.

No I'm sorry Mark but the argument about short careers and pay cuts doesn't cut the mustard these days. When a player is earning £675,000 per year a pay cut to the dark murky depths of poverty line wages of only £500,000 a year is the sort of thing that I, and probably a lot of people on here, would find hard to consider tough. And too many people think that when footballer stops playing at around 34 or 35 their working days are completely over. They are not. Most go on to do something else, albeit not so well paid, for many years and in those years they tend to earn the kind of money that most other people earn. Footballers are not all complete morons and do get other jobs, believe it or not. I don't know how many years SW has earned his £675,000 but over his entire career he will have stashed away a fairly tidy sum, believe me.
I can not feel sorry for someone taking a pay cut of £3000 per week to keep earning at that kind of level. SW played cat and mouse with us this summer and eventually beat TB at his own game of 'who blinks first'. He was just extremely lucky that Burnley came in at the last minute with a great offer that we couldn't match. If we had tried to and Burnley had offered more SW would have played both teams off against each other to get the best deal.
And Turf Moor/Burnley is nowhere near as attractive as the Amex/Brighton.

I think some one here want a reality check, Some seem to think he should take a drop in wages of 25% move to the most expensive part of the uk! and join a side that has sold its quality .. The rebuilding programme has a very very long way to go, We only need to look 6 months down the road and look at the age of our defence, lua lua out of contract and cms who is on 17k a week also free to walk, We have a fairly easy 5-6 games .... After that we hit a tricky 5-6 games, The season will be cast if we don't get 4-5 players in ASAP .. I won't mention robert codner, but he is solly march agent, by all accounts he is trying to work a deal at various clubs to take solly.. The next ten days will need sami on the phone to various managers, or we will be deep in the mire.
We are already deep in the mire!!! The next 10 days will see whether we have any chance of getting out of it.

I mean, it's got nothing to do with how you went about it. Good luck and we move on. There's only one Wardy at this club anyway![/p]
I wouldn't' wish him good luck-he still did the dirty on us at the last minute and no there are better places than Turf Moor.[/p]
I think some one here want a reality check, Some seem to think he should take a drop in wages of 25% move to the most expensive part of the uk! and join a side that has sold its quality .. Problem is policy of only offering contracts at end of the season. The thinking is we don't know what league we will be in. If Ward was offered deal last Jan then he would have signed IMO.
Pity he club don't apply the same policy to when season tickets have to be renewed, !

And we certainly don't want anybody at the club who showed total disrespect by not turning up for the arranged medical. The guy was going nowhere, Wolves didn't want him and The Albion recovered his career and he couldn't be bothered to show up? Stephen who? He might get regular games at Burnley but he is not PL quality and I suspect he is going to be found out pretty quickly. And yes. There is an element of sour grapes on my part.
