Charles Banya is poised to sign a permanent contract with Crawley today.

The former Fulham winger has impressed boss John Gregory since initially signing on a short-term basis following a successful trial.

The 20-year-old has come off the bench in all three of Crawley’s games this season and is expected to be rewarded for his performances with a one-year deal.

Gregory said: “I’m hoping Charles will sign today as I believe he has got all the potential to become a very good player.

“He was terrific when he came on against Swindon on Saturday and just needs to learn about playing at League One level a bit more. Once he appreciates it is not like academy football where performances are more important than results I think he could be a massive asset for us this season.”

Banya is likely to get further opportunities to impress in the next two games with skipper Josh Simpson and striker Matt Harrold still sidelined through injury.

Meanwhile, Reds could be without a back-up goalkeeper on the bench for tonight’s home game against Bradford.

Gregory was hoping to extend Raphael Speigel’s loan deal from West Ham but had not heard back from the Premier League club yesterday.

Gregory added: “I’m waiting to hear back from Sam (Allardyce, West Ham boss) but I feel they will want him back as he is not playing first team football.”
