Albion could hand Aston Villa left-back Joe Bennett a quick chance to shine at the Amex after signing him on loan for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old passed a medical today and is available to face Bolton on Saturday.

He will train with his new colleagues for the first time on Friday.

Bennett watched Albion beat Leeds at Elland Road last night and completed his medical at their training ground in Lancing this afternoon.

He has made 37 appearances for Villa since joining from his first club Middlesbrough for £2.75 million two years ago.

His 92 games for Boro included home and away starts against Albion in 2011-12.

Albion boss Sami Hyypia believes Bennett’s athletic style and comfort in possession make him an ideal recruit.

Hyypia said: "He is a dynamic left-back who's very comfortable on the ball. He's very mobile and will suit the way we want to play.

"He is a good footballer, who knows how to use the ball and I hope he will be a very good player for us.”

General consensus in the midlands is that he's been out of his depth in the PL and Villa suffered last year with him in their struggling team.
That said, may prove to be suitable for our needs in the Champ. Good ball player rather than tenacious tackler. A loan deal in this instance does make sense as he may need a chance to re-discover the potential he showed at M'boro at which point we could make it permanent if he cuts it.
From what I know around these parts, he may provide relative strength in depth rather than an outright and automatic number one at LB. So Chicksen might still has a definite part to play through the season.

Wonderful signing, welcome to the club!

As said, one would assume some wages are being paid by parent club. Who needs Stephen Ward now? I wonder how much this has saved us... more money for a striker?!

Tony seems to be delivering, as always on his promise that we would be happy at the end of the transfer window!

It's nice to see the signings coming in after a long summer, would've been nice to have a permanent left-back for a change but Bennett should be a good addition this season.

Starting to look like we have a team that can compete for top 6, roll on saturday!

Next up, a premiership quality striker to replace Ulloa and another creative wide player and we should be there..there's still an eight-figure sum of money to reinvest, lets hope some of it actually gets reinvested to build for the future. If not, Joao and Bennett will be gone next season and we'll be in a similar situation...can't rely on loan players when you're in the premiership (too optimistic?).

It's all gravy boys and girls, added quality to the squad without breaking the bank, here's hoping a top striker is not far off. I'm missing the next two games which is frustrating, really wanted to welcome the boys back after a fantastic win last night. Footballing fortunes change in a heart beat, just days ago it was doom and gloom and I must admit I was one of the fed up brigade. Things are looking very different now :-)

Stephen Ward was runner-up to Matty Upson in our Player of the Season poll. He's an experienced international. Who needs him? Well, clearly Burnley do.

Bennett may well prove to be an exciting young talent but right now, it's a bit early to be describing him as a "wonderful" signing. Can we at least see him play a game first?

The club is clearly trying to strengthen the squad while at the same time saving money to comply with FFP. If that's the way it has to be then so be it. But it would be nice if they were at least open about their MO.

Let's see whether any money is spent on a proven goalscorer.

I guess one win changes everything in the minds of some supporters.

I'm wondering whether being gazumped by Burnley over Ward did us a favour. Bennett might well be a better, pacier LB, in the mould of the classy Bridge (but not quite as good). Burnley wouldn't have had a sniff over Bennett, as Villa wouldn't have loaned him out to potential bottom-half of PL rivals. Ward was solid, an excellent defensive Championship LB, but not a patch on former England international Bridge who was the best LB I've seen play for the Albion by miles.

Hey Gee, it is good news, but in terms of what could be better?..... surely it would be to sign someone permanently, rather than on loan. Or not losing players in the first place. I know I'm splitting hairs here.

Really hope we get a quality striker on a long term contract, someone who has really bought into the Albion for the long term.

I think the team and club good do with stability and too many loans each season and changes of manager makes that hard to achieve.

That said, I was really please with the away win at Leeds... lets hope we do Bolton too! UTA

I posted that we would be back in for him a few days ago and got the thumbs down, hopefully because people didn't believe it rather than they didn't want the lad. Are Noone and Benno available? Would take either back. Expect we will land Baldock by the weekend to complete the squad. Great result last night. Now we are up and running!

Another signing and we are starting to look like a team. Just a couple more that can put the ball in the back of the net and we can get on with the season.
It's just a real shame that we couldn't get some of these places filled a week or two before the season started.
Lets hope they can quickly settle and make an impact on the pitch.
Still a little concerned that we have lost quality and decided to bank the profits by replacing on the cheap or via loans.
I really hope to be proved wrong.
I would also like to state that I am not a moaning minnie but a concerned fan watching an exodus of good players who have given us some fantasic memories while watching inactivity from the suits over replacements.

Yes JoeBlow we should remember but the other side of the coin is whether Bloom will for once get any new players in BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS ideally at least a week before.
This is the 3rd Summer running we have signed a number of players after the first few matches - remember 4 players joining on deadline day in 2012.
Bennett looks a useful addition (any chance of BHA having a 'buy' option?) and Teixeira, Holla and McCourt all add quality and creativity to the squad.
Now all we need are some strikers and at least 1 winger plus perhaps a CB depending on how highly SH rates Maksimenko.
Things definitely looking more positive. UTA.

I think you may be right about Baldock. The Red Bull Salzberg forward I would prefer though. Baldock is all too predictable and with Ulloa we took punt and look how that turned out. I read that Rosler at Wigan was lamenting the paucity of available strikers and the money that has to be spent to land them. Fulham/McCormack and Foest/Assabalonga having ruined things apparently.

Now we have a decent looking midfield taking shape I don't think there will be nearly as many problems getting goals. Stick with Macca, he will come good.

It was rumoured back in June that we might be interested in JS Casas and certainly worth considering although he would be quite pricey.
Reverting to Bennett, I have to say that the club moved smartly to get Bennett once Burnley hijacked Ward and I feel those involved should be commended.
Looks as if SH is ensuring that the club acquires the quality and type of players he wants. Good to see a bit of creativity being brought in, it was sadly missing last season.

Agreed. People may be angry with Ward but there's no denying that Bennett will have to go some to compare with him and Bridge.

The striker role is key and significant money will surely have to be spent. £2m was spent on Ulloa and it turned out to be a great investment. Without him we wouldn't have reached the play offs in the last 2 seasons. Hyypia must know of some very decent strikers in the bundesliga.

I've never believed this is just about FFP. I think TB wants to make Brighton self-sustainable as much as possible. That's ok if there is a decent team to watch and fans keep buying the tickets. I think there will be many fans who will look at all the money for the sold players and expect a quality striker to show up before the transfer window closes. How many other clubs are selling their best players to comply with FFP and looking for cheap options to replace them?

He's an experienced international. Who needs him? Well, clearly Burnley do. Bennett may well prove to be an exciting young talent but right now, it's a bit early to be describing him as a "wonderful" signing. Can we at least see him play a game first? The club is clearly trying to strengthen the squad while at the same time saving money to comply with FFP. If that's the way it has to be then so be it. But it would be nice if they were at least open about their MO. Let's see whether any money is spent on a proven goalscorer. I guess one win changes everything in the minds of some supporters.[/p][/quote]Agreed. Lots of comments over the last week or so bemoaning all the quality players Brighton have sold on. This is of course to some extent true, but lets remember they were not good enough to get us promoted so a breakup was called for. Nobody knows if the new look team will fare any better but from the video highlights against Leeds they played a much faster attacking game and I for one think they are creating a much stronger team. Time will tell, but I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised.

What a difference a week makes. This time last week we were all bemoaning the BOD at BHA and a week later we have 4 new players--one of which scored within 5 mins of him playing his first game for us. We will be ok--maybe not promotion standard but a position at the end of the season where we can hold our heads up---and Sammi will still be here IMO

Great that players are coming in and we can field a half decent side and fight for a top half finish, but again, it's loan players, freebies and others cast offs, we need to be building a squad for the future! or we will be in this same position next year!
Tex and Bennett will return to parent club, the older players (our defence) will disappear and the younger players we have, Ince, Chicksen, March and LuaLua if not played regularly will want away. Chicksen played a blinder last night, just needs games to get his confidence up, if we now play Bennett instead of him, he's off! and next season that's 2 left backs required.
Great that we will be a force again this season but there's no long term plan in what we are building. Will be cheering the lads on obviously, but would like to see more vision/forward planning than at present. UTA

This lad, if he delivers as expected, could easily become a purchase come the end of the season, and he would be another player of the right age group. I see this loan deal as a season long trial period.

I am not sure if it's fair to complain about the club being late in getting it's business done, this year or last, two managers have come in late so squad readiness is late. We need Hyypia to stick around so as to give him the chance of building his squad as soon as this season is over.

As others have said, one new wide player needed, I have to think that work is being done to sort that out. A new striker needed to bolster our attack and I am sure one will come, but I doubt that who ever it is not all on this forum will be pleased. I don't see the club splashing out big money as striker prices have been inflated beyond stupid. Probably another loan deal.

Academy is there yes, when I mentioned long term I was thinking more of the next 4-5 yrs so could have phrased it better. We may be able to get players from the premier academy's such as the two from Chelsea pushing through, but to actually bring youngsters through to first team regulars is a fair few yrs away imo. The frustrating thing for a lot of us fans is we had the momentum but have let it slip, people go on about, look where we've come from etc, but that's history now and we should be pushing on. Tony Bloom is a saint and nobody can thank him enough for the stadium etc, his money is safe, when the time comes to sell he will be quids in and rightly so, it's the lack of investment in the team that's the stumbling block, players sold in the last 8 months total £13m rising to £15m with add ons, massive savings in wages have been made and the big sponsors are now on board but we are holding back for some reason, maybe it's see where we are come January and if in with a shout splash the cash on 2-3 players that can get us a playoff spot or better! Fingers crossed!
Just got my tickets for Swindon game, the Mrs is going as well, her first away game so hope it's a good one, sandwiched between to home league games it might be a strange line up but would be good to get a good cup run together. UTA

Methinks there are a few on here who would abuse one of their own players.
Hope he proves any doubters wrong.
I have never understood the need to abuse a player or team.

The comments after a couple of signings and a win are very interesting! There are those who now think everything in the garden is rosy and their confidence has been rewarded (premature?) and those who clearly work with a 'damned if they do, damned if they don't' approach. (I think they're called 'moaning minnies' on here?)
I've been party to comments of Villa fans for the last two seasons about this lad and he clearly didn't cut it at PL level and found the step up too much. But that shouldn't deter confidence in him at our level and I get the feeling if we'd spent £1.5m on him, perception amongst the doubters who cry "scrooge' in TB's direction would have been very different.
I don't agree with everything the club does and the last two signings reek of alternatives when the first choices have gone elsewhere.
But at least we're professional enough to have contingencies in place. For that, we should be thankful.

I know we would like to build for the future and I agree loan players will return to their clubs but in this day and age (other than with our own development of players from the DS) modern football is all about the here and now.

In all reality if every player we had signed this summer was a permanent deal and not a loan, they would still be just as likely to move on after 1 year if they do well (being poached by bigger clubs) or moved on if they do badly.

As much as I’d prefer to see the players committed to the club on permanent deals the reality is that 3 or 4 year contracts mean next to nothing (other than a decent fee if sold on) as was seen with Buckley and Ulloa. It wouldn’t surprise me if we have another new manager next season as well as in all likelihood Sammi will either be snared by another club if he does well or sacked if things go pear-shaped. I'm not being negative, just realistic as football is all about the short term today.

I suspect in reality the team that starts next season will be radically different to the one we have now, and next season’s will be different to the one after that. It would be lovely to plan for the long term but realistically that’s unlikely to happen. All we can do is support the current squad as much as we can regardless as to whether the side is made up of loans or permanent players.

The suits have tried to pull the wool over our eyes with this one, the only criteria new signings have to fulfill are costing nothing and if possible played in the premier league, regardless of whether they were actually a success or not. The albion seem to collect unwanted players, who once showed promise but fell by the wayside and are now left wondering how they came to end up rusting away in a scrap yard.

Welcome Joe ,I`m sure you`ll bring plenty to the party .

If we still want a CB to complete our defence ,what about Sean St Ledger or Zat Knight ,both know the championship like the back of their hands ,and are both Free Agents which would please the suits no end .

Great signing, the boy can restore his reputation with us.
Bristol have bought a Rotherham striker so they may well be getting ready to sell Baldock. Bristol want 1m, sure BHA could offer half that with add ons if he scores set number of goals

UTA
You would like to see more vision/forward planning??? Ffs how about a £100million pound stadium, world class training facility and academy, top manager. Jeez people write some drivel on these threads.
