New boy Bennett reckons he can be just right for Albion

Joe Bennett with Sami Hyypia yesterday

Joe Bennett loves to get forward, as he shows here for Middlesbrough

First published in Sport by

Sami Hyypia has told his latest signing why he fits the Albion masterplan.

The Seagulls have taken attack-minded Aston Villa left-back Joe Bennett on loan for the rest of the season.

He could make his home debut against Bolton on Saturday when Joao Teixeira and Danny Holla, stars of the midweek win at Leeds, also get a first chance to impress fans at the Amex.

Bennett signed yesterday having watched his new team win 2-0 at Elland Road – and hearing first-hand from boss Hyypia how he could help them progress.

The 24-year-old Lancastrian said of Albion: “They kept the ball really well, from the back to the front, at Leeds.

“They defended well, they looked like they had a lot of energy.

“They like to go forward as well with the full-backs, which is part of my game as well.

“I like to go forward and get involved a bit more up the pitch which was nice to see. Hopefully I can fit into that.

“I spoke to the manager and he told me a bit about how he likes the team to play and how I could fit into that. It looks good up to now.”

Bennett joins his new team mates for training for the first time tomorrow.

He accepted there was little prospect of first team action with Aston Villa, who he joined from Middlesbrough two years ago, after they signed Aly Cissokho from Valencia.

Bennett cost Villa £2.75 million from Boro, where he played three seasons in the Championship and earned England under-21 honours.

Hyypia said: “He is a dynamic left-back who's very comfortable on the ball. He's very mobile and will suit the way we want to play.

"He is a good footballer, who knows how to use the ball and I hope he will be a very good player for us.”

Albion closed in on Bennett after a move to bring back Stephen Ward on a permanent transfer was hijacked by Burnley.

Bennett, who follows Ward, Wayne Bridge, Joe Mattock, Marcos Painter, Gary Borrowdale and Matt Richards in a series of on-loan Seagulls left-backs, revealed: “I only heard of it (the possible move) last week.

“The gaffer at Aston Villa called me and said there were a couple of teams interested in me if i woud like to go out on loan.

“They have just signed Cissokho, another left-back, so it didn’t really look like I would maybe feature as much as I would like to.

“So I took this opportunity to come to Brighton.”

Morning boys, I welcome Joe Bennett to our club always good to get another player in, but for me where does this leave Chickensen, will he be dropped for Saturday after playing well at Leeds, I fear for the lad what it will do to his confidence if he is dropped, I thought he would off been given a good run off games not just in the cup,
up the Albion!!

3 more loan players and we are done they are not spending any money this season that's the word coming from a close source it was put in a away that seemed to think the fans are being conned this season .so don't expect anymore money being spent this season they want the max loans as I said all along but that could work in our favour to stay up

I would like to see Chicksen continue to be involved in the squad and giving Bennett a good run for his money. The latter's recent form (the last 2013-2014 season) does not imply he should be an automatic choice and I hope Adam is given the incentive to keep fighting for his place. Bennett has already implied in the article above that the entire defence played well at Elland Road and was given a good lesson of what is required by Chicksen.
Good luck to them both. UTA...!!!

Just jesting with you Jeff, this site is far to serious at times, good competition at left back now, we might even secure Bennett on a permanent deal. His opportunities with Villa are limited so he might fancy a career on the south coast, let's get that striker in to really ignite our season and keep the crowds coming to the Amex.

If Adam Chicksen gets his head down, works hard and shows the right attitude there's no reason why he shouldn't keep hold of the LB slot. This signing could be the making of Chicksen providing he doesn't assume Joe Bennett will walk straight into the team. We need good competition for places in all areas of the park. Expect Adam to start on Saturday with Joe coming on in 2nd half with 30 mins to go. UTA

1st. we only have 2 loanees which is less than in previous seasons.
2nd. If the club can sign a player on a free and he is good enough, is that not better than spending £m for the sake of it?.

But I do agree we do need to sign a top striker & probably spend a few £m to get him.

So who is your close source on this one StS? Pray, do tell.
Also - any chance of just a little bit of punctuation in your post? I had to read it four times before I got the gist of it. UTA!

Chicksen still learning. Was often caught out of position against Wednesday and we need quality and experience NOW, not in 6 months time.
Recent signings are very good ... just need that striker!

Morning mate you said it yourself he is still learning, and the best way to learn is game time not bench time, I agree we need cover in all positions and like you say a striker, wouldn't it be great if we got the striker before Saturday!! No need to panic yet though!!

Sounds a good signing - originally cost 2.75m! With Chicksen improving (and also Maksi in the reserves) I'm quite pleased we didn't get Ward in the end. I guess we need at least 2 players for each position and left back does strike me as a position where we've been forced to play Calderon out of position quite a bit before (and El Abd before him). Sami's new look team is starting to take nice shape.

Here we go again what are loans going to do, yet again when they go back it means another summer of uncertainty when they go back. What's wrong with buying some players with the millions they have made , but oh ffp again none will get spent get to the end of the season and the team breaks up again . Sorry I see no sense in loans beyond the odd one

Judging by the attitude of some Villa fans at matches and on Twitter, I dont think Joe will be in a hurry to go back there. Hopefully he will do well for us, feel wanted by the Albion fans and manager and want to sign permanently in January or at the end of the season
