Holla spreads his wings with the Seagulls

Danny Holla turned down the chance to stay in Holland for three more years to test himself in England with Albion.

Den Haag were keen to secure his future at the start of the year, midway through his second season with the top flight Dutch club.

Holla wanted to spread his wings and signed a three-year contract with the Seagulls last weekend.

The holding midfielder, who impressed on his debut for Albion in Tuesday's 2-0 win at Leeds, revealed to The Argus: "I had the option in January to get three more years there (Den Haag) but I played a lot of games in Holland, 200 games.

"I wanted to go abroad and see how football in other countries is. I hope I can improve here.

"In Holland you see see all the stadiums (In England) , you know all the teams, and it gives me new challenges. I think that's good for me.

"I look at a lot of English games. The crowd is amazing and I love to play in those situations. The tempo of the football is high and I also like that."

Holla's record in recent seasons with Den Haag, FC Groningen and VVV Venlo on loan indicates Albion have signed an adaptable midfielder who could become their chief free-kick and penalty taker.

He might also get suspended, having accumulated 27 yellow cards and a red in his last four seasons in the Netherlands.

Holla said: "I'm a defensive midfielder but sometimes I also like to go in the box and score some goals. I have scored some free-kicks and penalties so I hope I can do it also here at Brighton."

This is what I posted on Wednesday...

I'm beginning to like the sound of this guy .....
"His stocky physique is ideal for the English game as he loves to stick his boot in and win tackles''
I see that he got 16 yellow an 1 red card in his 54 games for Den Haag.
We might just be taking our own Norman Hunter to Leeds tonight !
Has anybody got a ''Danny bites yer legs" banner ?

Let's get those banners ready...............

Warren Aspinall noted, on the radio commentary, that he very quickly seemed to be organising the midfield and almost running the game. Judging by the way we seemed to be overpowering Leeds particularly in the first half on Tuesday, I'll have some of that! This guy has obviously got a good footballing mind, tough temperament, good awareness and wants to improve his game. All first class as far as I'm concerned. Possible future captain?

This lad is going to be just what the Doctor ordered, does what it says on the tin, my class is half full at this time.
I am not going to go on about Mr Poyet but his team was too weak in my opinion for this League.
You need a strong alround team that's going to fight with passion every game as a unit, for success & pride. I for one have missed that, gone are the days where football was football. Bring back the Glory times of 1983, he shot he scored. Alan Mulley's blue & white army.
I must be honest on Tuesday, I did not give Brighton a hope at Leeds, I could not believe what I was listening to. Great result, I just have this feeling the last time this happened was back in 1983, I new then we could do it should have and all. Ladies & Gentlemen this is the Year come on you Boy's.

This guy had a great game at Leeds on Tuesday, there are not that many players that arive new to a club, go straight into a match and be as influential as he was.
Good news also if he is good at dead ball situations and penalties, something we missed last season with David and Orlandi not being as accurate as they were previously.

Haven't seen Danny play yet but he seems like a new Brian Horton.
That'll do for me.
Feeling more confidant about this season already.
Over the last 3 seasons always thought we were a bit powder puff in certain areas but this guy looks like bringing much needed steel to the side. Sami seems to be stamping his authority on the players. Long may it last. UTA

Willie, Willie Irvine says...

With such a high card count to his name, it seems he will need to modify his temperament or sharpen up his timing, particularly given the higher tempo an greater physicality of the English game. Otherwise 'll be a spectator far too many times for his and the team's good. Sounds promising, though.

Credit where credit is due. Where are the "Burke out" brigade? The recruitment team have obviously pulled off a top draw signing with this lad! Not to mention our Portugese wonder kid from Anfield. Best performance since the Poyet days in Tuesday night.

Perhaps some of us have learnt not to judge things too soon?!
