Albion target still a Corker for now

First published in Sport by , Chief sports reporter

Albion transfer target Brian Lenihan will make his farewell appearance for Cork City tomorrow night ahead of a move to England.

Cork manager John Caulfield has confirmed the 20-year-old right-back will be involved against Bohemians.

Caulfield said: "While we have accepted an offer for Brian, he has yet to discuss personal terms with the club in question and will be available to us tomorrow night.

"I would hope that the crowd will come out in force to give him a big send-off in what is likely to be his final appearance for the club."

Several Premier League clubs, headed by Hull and Crystal Palace, have been pursuing Lenihan but Albion are currently in pole position, as it is believed Cork have accepted their bid.

Completely agree.
By the way Holla and Tex were great on Tuesday, if we can keep them injury free then we will progress well.
I was impressed with the way Joao came out with the ball several times after being surrounded by three or four Leeds players, he will be a headache to other teams with his movement and passing.
I also thought the 'high viz' away shirts were great and looked better than the black and red stripes, they seemed to make any 'shirt pulling' more visible.

If he goes to a PL side there will be very little chance of him playing first team football immediately, but if he comes to us I am sure that he will be considered from day one. From what I have read elsewhere, he is not just for the future but for now in Sami's team. This I am sure will swing his signature our way.

I understand - and agree with - the reasonable reticence to 'celebrate' just yet but let's not blame the Argus for running this story.
They have clearly made a few calls and got the nod from someone in the chain that we're in pole position and are therefore running with the facts as they stand. The quiet assurance may have come from the club, it may not, but if it wasn't from the club, I'd suggest they would have been told to calm down by now.
Obviously, as we've seen before, that doesn't mean it's all plain sailing but, as it stands, I'm sure the current facts are as printed; We've had a bid accepted, he's playing his last game and then will come over and sign. The Argus has done it's journalistic job, but today's accuracy can always be scuppered by future events. Probably and hopefully that's won't be the case, but if it is, it won't be the Argus's fault.

Agreed Captain Haddock.
Assuming we do acquire him this looks like a sensible bi of forward planning.
Firstly it obviously makes sense to sign him before anybody else does - the early bird strategy.
Secondly both Bruno and Calde are only on one year contracts at present and we don't want to be faced with trying to recruit 2 RBs next Summer - look at the trouble we have had this Window just trying to get one LB in.
Bear in mind that both Greer and Hughes (as well as Ankergren) will be out of contract at the end of the season and Bennett's Loan will have ended and the Albion' Back 5 will need major re-building.
So if we get this lad that will be one step I the right direction for the future.

AIS. The Argus were on a hiding to nothing on this. The story was widely reported in the Irish press this morning so if they do not report it they get accused of not having their finger on the pulse. Then if they do run the story they get accused of possibly scuppering the deal. As we know they do not always get it right but did so IMO on this one..

Watching Villa on MOD over the last 2 seasons.
They were very exposed at the back.
It is easy to blame the defenders, but if they are getting no protection from those in front what chance do they have facing down top prem forwards.
If Bennett is to be used as a wing back, it could be the making of him.

If it is Burke running the show in fact whoever it is, needs to get over there and sign this guy up subject to a medical, I would like to think in some way we have already ( maybe had an agreement that we would match any offer) done so, and have learnt our lesson of just a week ago? unless this is to be a repeat ?

Cork are quite happy 'cos come October he's out of contract. Lenihan is happy too because his contract apparently stipulates he will be 1st team squad and not DS or reserves... and of course there are the sell-ons if and when he moves on to the PL - but that's assuming we don't get there ourselves. (Sources: The Irish Independent and The Irish Examiner.) The various write ups on him certainly read better than that of Joe Bennett but I guess we'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt, hoping at the same time we can keep Adam Chicksen happy - I think he has a great future too.
Another proven striker and the bookies may be twitchy about the 14/1 odds they were offering a week or so ago. LOL.
