Boss John Gregory believes Crawley are still on course to challenge for the play-offs despite their inconsistent start to the season.

Reds are currently 13th in League One and are only four points above the relegation zone while being six adrift of the top six.

Gregory admits his side are yet to really find their feet after a complete overhaul during the summer but victory at Gillingham today could lift them into the top ten for the first time since winning their opening two games of the campaign.

Crawley won just two of their next 12 following those 1-0 wins over Barnsley and Swindon but Gregory is satisfied with their position after bouncing back from heavy defeats against Peterborough and Notts County with a hard-working victory over Walsall in midweek.

Gregory said: “Anything is possible. We are not that far behind the top six which is our target so I am staying focused on what is above us.

“We haven’t played that well at times this season but if we can keep picking up points to keep us in touch then I’m confident we can mount a challenge because we will get better as the season goes on.

“At the moment I am trying to find the right formation and the right combination of players and that has resulted in some inconsistent performances. I’m sure that soon we’ll find our feet and click and go on a run which pushes us up the table.

“Rotherham were in a similar position to ourselves at this stage last season. They weren’t playing spectacular football but were hard to beat and once they gained momentum they ended up winning the play-offs.

“That is what we need to do at the moment by grinding out points even if we perhaps don’t deserve them. We came back from 2-0 down at Coventry to draw 2-2 and come May 2 that may be a massive point for us.”
