Point-saver David Stockdale admits he has been target of personal abuse on Twitter this season.

But the Albion goalkeeper insists he still enjoys talking to fans face-to-face – and would love to help secure a win for them.

Stockdale’s saves ensured the 1-1 draw with Rotherham was not an even more disappointing result.

But the keen tweeter kept communication on social media to a minimum on Saturday night.

Stockdale told The Argus: “Twitter is a great tool to talk to fans but I felt some of the criticism coming my way was a little bit harsh as in where they went with it – personal and family wise.

“Wishing I got injured, things like that. There was a time when they started blaming everyone and that is a time to be quiet and let our talking be done on the pitch.

“Certain fans say ‘You didn’t play very well’ and I can take that, fine.

“I know as an honest person that I maybe haven’t played well.

“But some people go out there and abuse you.”

“People who talk to you (in person) are quite genuine.”

Stockdale could feature against Tottenham on Wednesday but admits he would rather Albion were in Championship action.

He said: “I think people want a league game because we feel we are getting so close to getting it right - but will it come too late when we finally do that?

“One day we will come out with a 5-0 win and people will say ‘Where has that come from?’ but we believe that is in us.”
