Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith has rejoined Peterborough United on loan for the rest of 2014.

And fellow forward Chris O'Grady has followed him through the exit door at the Amex by linking up with long-time admirers Sheffield United until January 31.

The Seagulls' capture of Darren Bent from Aston Villa has paved the way for Mackail-Smith's return to League One Posh and O'Grady heading back to the Steel City.

Peterborough hope to galvanise their promotion push by restoring the prolific partnership Mackail-Smith shared with Aaron Mclean, who rejoined them recently on loan from Bradford.

Mackail-Smith, sidelined for almost all of last season by Achilles and ankle problems which kept him out for 13 months, has struggled for game time under Albion boss Sami Hyypia.

So too has O'Grady, who was wanted by Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough in the summer when he joined Albion from Barnsley for £500,000 on a lucrative three-year contract.

The ex-Sheffield Wednesday centre-forward has started only five of Albion's 18 Championship fixtures and was not in the squad for last Saturday's 3-3 draw at Norwich, where Mackail-Smith replaced him on the bench after recovering from illness.

Clough has revealed the deal could be extended but he admits O'Grady could miss the game against Notts County tomorrow due to a "slight injury".
