Sam Rents helped Albion to their only win this year at Chesterfield last month.

The young defender is hoping his first League outing since then produces a repeat performance and the same result at Leyton Orient tomorrow.

The Seagulls were resilient and disciplined at Chesterfield, attributes which Rents believes will play a part in a successful battle against relegation.

"We had two clean sheets before Saturday (at Brentford) and we've had a solid shape defensively," Rents said. "I am sure we will carry that on.

"At Chesterfield our first intention was to keep a clean sheet, so we'll be as solid as we can again and hopefully get a goal or two.

"We've just got to stick together and try to get through it together. I think we can definitely get out of it.

"Nobody has got their heads down. We have still got that belief in the squad, we just need to get a run going again.

"I think the penny will drop, the results will start coming in and the confidence will be sky-high again.

"There is a little bit of pressure but we try not to show that. I am sure everybody deep down knows how important each game is now but we know what we can do and I am sure we will go out and put it right."

Rents has been vying all season with Kerry Mayo for the left-back role. He gets his chance again now that Mayo is suspended for his red card in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Brentford.

Mayo was sent-off moments before half-time for a second foul on Brentford's rookie winger Charlie Ide.

Rents only came on in the closing stages at Griffin Park at the expense of Joe O'Cearuill but it wasn't meant to be like that.

Manager Dean Wilkins revealed: "Kerry was coming off at half-time for Sam because he had got a booking.

"Sam was getting prepared and, just as Kerry made his second challenge, the guy over the tannoy was announcing one minute of added time. We were a minute away from still having 11 players on the pitch."

The timing of Mayo's dismissal was unfortunate both for Albion and Rents, who could also count himself a little unlucky to lose his place following the Johnstone's Paint Trophy exit at Bristol City.

"It's a bit disappointing when you are out of the side but it's the gaffer's decision and you have to respect that," said Rents.

"I've carried on working as hard as I can in training. I just want to get a run of games going. You only learn by playing and getting experience and that's what I will keep on doing."

Rents was a spectator when Albion hammered Leyton Orient 4-1 at Withdean in September, their biggest League win of the season.

The O's suffered another stuffing on the south coast on Saturday, 5-0 at Bournemouth, but Rents does not think too much can be read into either of those results.

"We beat them at home but I am sure they will be a totally different side," he said. "It's obvious they are going to come out raring to go but we are not worrying about Leyton Orient. We've got our own plan to follow. We've had good results away from home all season."

Albion's chances of victory for only the second time in 13 games in all competitions are improved by the absence through injury from the Orient attack of Jabo Ibehre, the muscular centre forward who turned down a £100,000 move to the Seagulls on the last day of the August transfer window.

Wilkins admitted: "In terms of the physical attributes he brings that is a bonus but someone is going to come into the side and want to stay in.

"We might have a different type of problem, somebody who is not quite so physical but is desperate to do well."

Albion's own imposing presence up front, Bas Savage, is expected to start after making an impact as a second half substitute at Brentford.

Wilkins wants plenty of balls going into the box for him after the Seagulls treated the Brentford penalty area almost like a no-go zone in the first half.

He said: "We are very conscious of that and if we don't do it tonight then we need our backsides kicked."
