Ed Joyce and Matt Machan continued where they left off in the first innings as Sussex made a strong start in their second innings against Worcestershire at Hove.

The pair followed up their partnership of 145 on Sunday by adding 119 for the second wicket after the early departure of Luke Wells.

Both completed half centuries to push the Sussex total on from 8-0 overnight to 131-2 at lunch, a lead of 87.

Machan played a far more measured innings compared to his blistering assault on the Worcestershire bowling in the first innings but still reached his half century off 67 balls.

The Scotland international fell just before lunch when he was trapped lbw for 55 by Alexei Kervezee.

Earlier, Wells’s poor start to the season continued as he perished in the second over of the day when he prodded tentatively at a ball from Charles Morris and was caught at first slip having made just four.

Joyce remained unbeaten at lunch having reached his second half century of the season from 77 balls which included one big six off Jack Shantry.
