Injury-hit Sussex expect to be handed a huge County Championship boost – thanks to Chris Jordan’s axe by England.

Coach Mark Robinson is ready to welcome the all-rounder back to Hove in time for the four-day game against Warwickshire, which starts on Sunday.

Robinson was waiting for official confirmation but said he was confident Jordan would be sent back to his county by England.

He is unlikely to be part of the side which takes on Somerset in the NatWest T20 Blast in Taunton today (5.30pm).

Sussex have slipped from top spot to mid-table in the congested Championship division one table after two defeats.

Their seam attack in particular has been decimated by injury and Robinson will be delighted to welcome back a player fired up to impress after being left out of his country’s opening home Test of the summer.

Robinson said: “We are hoping and expecting to have him for Sunday, “It would obviously be a big boost to get a player of that quality back.”

Ajmal Shahzad is ruled out by a torn pectoral muscle and fellow strike bowler Tymal Mills is unable to play four-day cricket because of back spasms.

Jordan lost his international place to Durham pace bowler Mark Wood for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s as England sought more firepower with the ball.

He was also absent from the Sussex squad which was announced later in the day for tonight’s T20, in which they aim to record a second successive win.

Seamer Matt Hobden has travelled to Taunton to boost bowling options.
