Albion keeper Christian Walton went from zero to hero in a torrid introduction to the Toulon tournament for England’s Under-20s in France against unfancied Morocco.

Aidy Boothroyd’s youngsters drew 3-3 in their opening group game last night, despite playing most of the second half with ten men after Wolves defender Dominic Iorfa saw red for a second bookable offence.

Walton was at fault for Morocco’s early equaliser but came to the rescue in injury time to preserve a point.

The Seagulls’ prospect made a shaky start after Birmingham prospect Jemarai Gray had given England an eighth minute lead.

He misplaced a pass out of his area and was then penalised by a linesman for handling a through ball just outside the box.

It proved expensive as the resulting free-kick took a wicked deflection off Iorfa’s team-mate Kortney Hause on the end of the defensive wall to gift Morocco parity.

The North Africans were ahead a minute later, Achraf Bencharki catching Bournemouth defender Baily Cargill in possession.

Sunderland’s Duncan Watmore made it 2-2 but Walton was beaten again for the third time in 39 minutes as Bencharki feasted on another defensive blunder, this time by Iorfa.

Substitute Chuba Akpom, who hit a hat-trick past Walton for Arsenal’s under-21s at the Amex in December, levelled for the ten men 13 minutes from time with a shot into the roof of the net.

Walton acrobatically tipped over Ayoub Qasmi’s shot four minutes into stoppage time to spare England’s blushes.

Walton was preferred to Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford to win his sixth cap.

England’s next match is against Ivory Coast on Saturday afternoon.
