Spanish star David Lopez has revealed why he asked Albion to take him back.

The midfielder has been told by his club Lugo that he can move on, despite being under contract.

He would love a return to England – preferably the Amex.

David still has a year left to run on his deal with the Spanish second-tier side and played in most of their matches last term.

But he finds himself in the unusual position of openly approaching clubs while under contract elsewhere.

David is one of Lugo’s bigger earners and they would reluctantly let him go for financial reasons.

The player’s agent informed the Seagulls of his availability earlier this summer by phone and email but has reported no response from the club as yet David has been encouraged by feedback he has received from supporters after posting a photo of himself celebrating an Albion goal on social media.

The Argus revealed David’s desire to return a month ago.

Now the player himself has come forward to explain why he asked his agent to make contact.

He said: “They are trying to control things a bit more financially here, more or less like they do in England.

“They have a new president and head coach at Lugo as well.

“There are clubs interested and we are looking at the best options. There has been interest from the second division here.

“I would be happy to come to England in general but, if I had the choice, it would be with Brighton.

“I know the city and the club and people there and I had a fantastic time.”

David was encouraged a return could be possible when he heard of changes in the Seagulls’ player recruitment department.

Asked by The Argus if his hopes of what would be a remarkable return to the club were realistic, he replied: “That doesn’t just depend on me. It depends on Brighton, the club, the coach, but I think it is possible, certainly from my side.

“I’ve been training with Lugo and preparing for the season.

“If I don’t get an offer which suits me I still have a year here and I’m quite happy here.

“I thought last season went well. I played in a lot of games.

“I had ups and downs, like the team as a whole, But I felt good physically.

“Lugo like to play the ball around on the deck, which suits me.”
