Sussex have decided to wrap Luke Wright in cotton wool ahead of a week that could make or break their season.

Wright, pictured above, will not feature in today’s Royal London One Day Cup clash with Glamorgan at Swansea to keep him fit and fresh for the Championship match against Middlesex on Friday and next Wednesday’s NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final.

The Sharks are already out of contention for the quarter-finals of the 50-over competition after taking just one point from their first five games and are wary of the in-form Wright picking up an injury.

Chris Nash will also sit out today’s game due to a sore Achilles while Ollie Robinson is sidelined by a hamstring problem with Stef Piolet, Ben Brown and Luke Wells coming into the side.

Coach Mark Robinson said: “It is a difficult balancing act as you want to do right by the competition but we have also got to take into account we have two very important games coming up.

“Luke has been in such good form and is so important to us that we are taking every precaution with him while Chris and Ollie have been carrying injuries.

“It gives Ben and Luke (Wells) an opportunity to play ahead of the trip to Lord’s on Friday too. Luke had a slight injury to his side but is okay now and it is a chance for him to gain more experience in white-ball cricket.”

Sussex have lost their last four games in the RLODC after the washout against Lancashire in the opening match and although their last three games are effectively dead rubbers Robinson is looking for them to pick up a morale boosting win.

Robinson added: “It has been a disappointing competition for us but all you can do is try to win the next game and gain some momentum heading into what is a massive week for the club.”
