Eastbourne Borough's march towards the play-offs continued following an impressive 2-0 victory over Sussex rivals Bognor at Priory Lane last night.

A goal from Allan Tait was followed with a clinical second-half strike from skipper Paul Armstrong.

With fellow play-off contenders Newport County winning 4-3 at Weston-super-Mare last night courtesy of a 90th-minute goal it means Borough's destiny is still not in their own hands despite three victories in five days.

They must beat Braintree in their final game at home tomorrow and hope either Newport or Bishop's Stortford fail to win to claim a place in the top five. Newport take on Cambridge City at home while Bishop's Stortford entertain Lewes.

Borough boss Garry Wilson said: "It has been fantastic entertainment for the supporters and we have played some excellent football this season.

"We are pleased to take it to the final week of a long campaign and give ourselves a chance of the play-offs with three points against Braintree.

"We have made Priory Lane a hard place to come to and we would love another three points this Saturday."

Borough were looking to follow up their impressive victory over Newport on Tuesday but they did not have it all their own way against a lively Bognor side.

Eastbourne did, however, force the first chance. Tait laid off to Armstrong, whose first-time shot deflected just wide.

Bognor had a spell of possession and their neat passing forced a chance for Richard Hudson. His angled drive across goal needed the slightest touch but it just eluded skipper Luke Nightingale.

Jodey Rowland then headed wide following a Hudson corner.

Eastbourne opened the scoring in the 18th minute and inevitably it came from in-form striker Tait.

Tait finished well at the second attempt following a pinpoint cross from Adam Wilde.

Wilde was impressive on the left wing. Moments later, his clever play helped to set up Armstrong but the Borough skipper's curling effort was well saved by Craig Stoner.

The home side looked confident and were searching for their second. Ben Austin's effort was blocked following a free kick before Matt Smart volleyed over.

After half time, Bognor introduced Albion midfielder Scott Chamberlain for Ben Johnson. Chamberlain showed some classy touches in midfield but it was Borough who created three decent chances.

First Tait sprang the offside trap but shot straight at the keeper.

Minutes later, Stoner somehow deflected Atkin's shot from three yards around the post and from the resultant corner Atkin powered a header just over.

Borough's pressure eventually told in the 64th minute. Austin's run and cross to the far post finally found Armstrong, who picked his spot and finished well past Stoner.
